This happened on Los Feliz Bl. and San Fernando Rd. in Glendale, Ca.
I recall that even in the 1950's as a kid that bad car accidents were a big draw for the crowds. We had a Prince Castle/Cock Robbin (World's best hamburgers & shakes) next door to a Body repair shop and they prided themselves on having some of the most horrific, bloody wrecks in the county out front on display. I can remember licking triple decker ice cream cones and viewing totally crushed cars with likely fatal results with total innocence and fascination. Jimmy
Jimmy,I did the same.I met my future wife at the Cock Robin in Downers Grove where she worked.There was a towing company a 1/2 mile north and my dad would take us there to see the bad ones.Jim
When I was in high school they had a demolished car that a local fellow was killed in hauled in to the front lawn of the high school. It was left there for several weeks as an example of reckless driving.
Jimmy, I agree the worlds best Hambergers and Shakes, I have eaten at three Wheaton, Naperville & Downers Grove. I even remember the old Prince Castle in Wheaton. I guess I'm dating myself. LOL It's still great.....
Funny thing Guys, I didn't even realize that Cock Robin/Prince Castle was a chain until I did some research on it for a book I'm writing about growing up in the 1950's Midwest. The Prince Castle I grew up on was in Arlington Hts., Illinois just a few blocks from the Arlington Horse Racing track. We had a roller rink next door so it was quite the place in the 50'S & 60's to hang out at. The best part was the kid who's parents owned it was in my Cub Scout Pack and we would get to eat there for free after meetings when his mother was our 'Den Mother'. Man those three square scoops of Grape, Orange and Lemon ice cream were heaven!Jimmy
Gee, I forgot all about the triple square dip ice cream cones at Prince Castle. We used to ride our bikes down Chestnut St. in Franklin Park to the Prince Castle on River Road, just north of Grand Ave; to this day, I'm not sure if that's considered Franklin Park or River Grove.

Actually, to do it right, you had a hot dog from Vienna Hot Dogs next door to the Prince Castle, then the Prince Castle ice cream cone for desert. Then we "worked it all off" by riding our bikes on the "roller-coaster" bridle trail along the DesPlaines River.
I remember my Dad complaining when the price of a Prince Castle shake/malt was increased from twenty cents to a quarter in the late '40's!
Say, those "triple square dip" cones were actually sherbet were they not? I remember the colors; orange, green & purple; (orange, lime and grape sherbet, right?)

Rodger that on the sherbet Harold. The shakes were part of the Prince Castle merger and called 'One-in-a-Million'. The real novelty however was the 'self service' aspect. You just grabbed a tray and filled it up with what ever you wanted. It made too it easy to over spend that 1 dollar allowance. My favorite in the 50's was watching the older 'Greasers' come over from the roller rink. These were the real Fonzies not the TV fabrications, these guys were scary and you didn't stare. There were even a few local gangs of them but they didn't fight or really do anything bad, all they did was drag race and ditch the six local police. Jimmy

Terry, On the bright side the fenders look like they came out alright. Do you know the cause of the accident?
Cause of the accident....no brakes on a downhill stretch of our last "Stag Tour" north of Grass Valley Ca. The fenders straddled Terry's T Roadster Pick-up bed. The tailgate impacted the radiator and nobody got hurt.
One of our family's first tours with the Denver club back in about 73' pulling down into a parking lot we slowed and Dan Robilettie(sp) following us in his newly restored 26 touring car got in neutral in the Ruckstell Axle and free-wheeled right into the back of my touring. Bent both fenders to the wheels and broke the neck off his radiator. Having only the top bows in a boot with no upholstery done yet on the top the fenders were our only hurt. Able to pull them out and the small crease they left is still there as the fenders have yet to be re restored.
Jay, the final determination of cause: The shifter tower on the coupe's Ruckstell broke allowing the shifter to wallow around. Lee tried to pull down into Ruckstell for the upcoming downhill only to discover he went into neutral... when he fixes it all he is putting in auxilliary brakes.... if you have an auilliary transmission you should put in extra brakes too. Heck, I don't even have an auxilliary tranny and "can't" go into neutral but still have extra brakes!
The fenders were undamaged due to some really excellent driving by Lee (shown pointing out the damage in the photo above... just in case you had trouble spotting it!).
My car has no auxilliary transmisson, but I put Rocky Mountain brakes on there anyway with the transmission brake in service also. I used every bit of my auxilliary brakes, transmission brakes, low pedal and reverse pedal to stop both cars on a downhill run. Result, a few frazzled nerves, no damage to my 1927 pick-up ("Rusty") and maybe $1500-2000 damage to the coupe. We're all tickled that there were no medical damages to anyone.
Lee points out an aproximately 1/4" skuff in Rusty's rust... only car on the tour which could have sustained such a hit with no damage!
