Should the wing nuts for the valve covers on a 1912 engine be painted black or left natural?

These look like they are painted.

Probably they were "raven finished", a kind of black oxide process, although this wasn't widely used this early on.

Checked the 6th Edition of the MTFCI Judging, and part 700 400C stated 'wing nuts on valve cover doors', but no spec for finish.

Years ago found these wing nuts in some early NOS parts, so guessed these were original valve cover nuts.

Have them on the '27 touring



When I got these, no finish on them.



Shape is a bit different than the repro, but seem to be a nice flare for early cars.

I painted mine with the same aluminum paint that I used on the valve covers, and the transmission inspection cover.

However, I seem to recall reading somewhere that the hex nut was used to hold the valve cover on starting in either late December, 1911 or January, 1912, maybe around s/n 100,000 (?) so depending on your era of 1912, they may not have been used.

My '16 came with wing nuts. Don't know how they got there. They are now painted incorrect Red to match the incorrectly painted Red Engine .
