I recently rebuilt my model T motor and transmission, the engine is purring like it should. However while sitting idling it stopped. I lifted the rear wheels from the ground and it started. While running I hit the brake and whatever was locked up let go, anyone have any ideas of what may have gone wrong?

Jack, After raising the rear wheels and hitting the brake a few times it let go. This is a new one for me. I pulled the motor Sunday afternoon and have not had time to tear into it, seems like the transmission to me. However i'm not sure.

It started by itself after you jacked it up or did you start it? Sounds to me like it died, then you jacked it up and started it. Then after you hit the brake a few times the wheels stopped turning. I think your clutch may have been stuck or dragging. you might have learned more by driving it. Fair chance its a non-problem.

Ted, I had to jack the wheels off the ground before it would start, after it started is when I hit the brake and it released. Thank You

Maybe your clutch was not adjusted correctly. Here is the basic adjustment:


I suggest that you do all the trouble shooting you can before tearing it down. Might just be an adjustment or need some oil circulation.

You just rebuilt the transmission? Sounds like maybe a triple gear bushing got tight and your actions broke it free. Same thing happened to my dad many years ago. He ran the car for years after that and when he got into it again for other issues, he found that one bushing had seized to the triple pin and the gear was spinning on the bushing outer diameter. Never really made a problem but he fixed it just the same.

By the way, I wouldn't worry about it too much right now. If the car drives and sounds o.k. and it doesn't do it again, I would write it off as a bit of "break-in" tightness.
