I am helping a friend straighten out a very nice 1926 Coupe he bought, but it supposedly has a misfire the owner would like to fix. I got three revolutions out of the engine before the starter's Bendix broke. Thinking it was the spring or a sheared bolt (as usual), I removed the back cover, only to find that the #5021 drive gear's balancing ring had broken away from the gear. That hadn't happened to me before - until today. Looking through the parts catalogs, I see that we can order just this part, but I don't see how the #5021-12 "Head Sleeve" is to be removed so that the broken drive gear can first be removed from the spiral shaft. It has a small hole on either side of the sleeve, so I assume a tool is inserted and the sleeve spun off while the shaft is held stationary? Or is it to be removed with a puller, using those holes as the anchor points? If spun off, what tool is best (an awl?) and is the thread cut in the normal direction or reversed to avoid loosening? I'd hate to be applying pressure in the wrong direction! We'd sure rather buy this $20.00 part instead of the whole enchilada for around $75.00 I looked in the 2012 Forum for answer, but didn't see what I need.

Some hints at this older post, with pictures.
The sleeve on the front of the bendix is threaded and screws on. As best I remember it is a right hand thread.
If the counterweight has broken loose it can be brazed back in place.
Marshall, the end sleeve is staked after it is threaded on, on the inside of the sleeve. To get it off I hold the opposite end in a vice. Then I get two round head nails which will fit into the holes in the sleeve and cut them off short so the heads sit proud of the sleeve holes. These protruding heads enable you to apply a pair of multi grip pliers to the sleeve, to wind it off the thread, the nail heads stopping the pliers slipping on the sleeve.

Thanks to all for your responses. These and the thread from 2009 will definitely help straighten out this problem. I see the little spring-loaded bolt in the parts catalog and referenced in the the 2009 thread, but it's not on any of the parts I removed. I wonder if that's why the collar broke off the drive gear? Where does it go? Maybe it's sheared flush and I can't see it?
Couple of pictures attached. One shows a disassembled unit. That my help you picture things a bit (no pun intended). You will note the counterweight is gone. The other is assembled. If you look closely you can see the little post and spring. The post runs on the threads and goes into the little hole on the counterweight.
Thanks, Steve. I now see it on our damaged Bendix drive. Does anyone know if this screw/spring is included when one orders the #5021G "Head Sleeve" or must it (#5021PS) be ordered, too? Or can the old one be removed and installed on the new part? If so, how? Questions, questions, questions...
They should interchange with a new one. "Should" being the operative word.
You compress the spring and start it as you start the counterweight thingy onto the thread. The post rides on the thread itself.
