You can double nut them and turn them out or use a vice grip and remove them with that. If they are rusted some light heat my help and/or your favorite penetrating oil. Be careful with the heat, so you don't crack the block, heat evenly and largely.

I've found this style of stud remover far superior over the double nutting or any of the ratchet style. Since the tool grabs the stud at the base to generate maximum twist.

Thanks for that link, J&M. I always use the double-nut method so I don't mess up the stud with vise-grips, but it's time consuming. I'll need to try one of those gizmos.

This handy Sears Craftsman stud remover I've used for years and works well on those manifold studs.

Heat the stud cherry red. Keep the heat on the stud and dont let the block get hot.
let the stud cool off or cool slowly with a wet rag.
Do this a few times and use vise grips to slowly loosen the stud.
Works most every time.
You can use this method on any bolt or stud on any piece of machinery or equipment.
