Have you ever seen this happen?

Ouch!
Did you find anything else broken? It looks like something caused the car to stop suddenly due a part siezing which put so much strain on those gears that they broke.

Were these riveted triple gears? I had a trany I bought from a pile of junk,that was pretty much that way. Only thing salvageable was the flywheel.
Is this in one place or three places? It would seem like it would have to be three places. What did the triple gears look like? I suppose since the low gear has the smallest radius it had the higher load of the gearset.
Answer: No I have not seen that happen.

It was in one place only. Flywheel is toast as one of the triple gear pins is loose. All three triple gears were spinning on the bushings. I don't know the whole story. Just got the trans to repair for a guy.

well i know blue is around 850 degrees. that sucker got HOT! why must people insist on setting things up tight?
is there no way to repair a loose pin hole in a flywheel? if not i guess save it for a HCCT.
You can probably find a way to use the flywheel again. Oversize pin maybe.
Tom, I bet they didn't set up enough clearance on the triple gears. The bushings seized on the pins and the gears spun... enough to get really hot! I hope those are standard pins and you can go oversize.
You are really a magic worker if you can fix that tranny! Can you salvage the brake and reverse drums?

I will replace the flywheel. I have dozens of them so it ain't worth messing with the old one. The reverse and brake drum look fine. Yes Terry, I agree with you, probably set up too tight.

Someone a couple months ago had that happen. There were a number of postings here about it.
Can a flywheel like that be repaired? Yes, however it really is not worth it. From when the pin first begins to spin in the flywheel, the gears have pressure pushing them out from center. The hole is worn almost totally off center. Therefore you cannot simply use a special over-size custom pin because the final position has to be precise in an egg shaped hole. You could mill the hole out even larger if you can index the three holes together precisely enough. A tricky task (read as expensive) in even the best of machine shops.
If anyone close by me has a flywheel like that, I also need one for an HCCT.

Was the crankshaft broken at the same time?
No mention of a broken crank. Transmission locked into high.
I had a similar experience a couple months ago. Broke teeth on the low speed drum gear. I had a frozen triple gear bushing. Here's the discussion and photos:

When you did your rebuild, were you able to get the bush off the shaft without cutting it? Did you perchance then mic the shaft and mic the ID of the bush?

Steve, looks like pretty much the same thing. I guess I missed that thread.
The bush was frozen solid. I tried to use a puller to get it off, but it wouldn't budge. I finally slit it with a dremel cut-off tool and pryed it open enough to get it to release. It was a bear. I'm in the process of rebuilding now.
