Is this rim done for? Or are there any salvage or repair suggestions?

I wouldn't trust riding on them, even after you repaired them.
I had a set like that, I took them to the recycle yard.
You can find replacements on Ebay from $60-$120 or by new from one of the T vendors.

The rust can be cut out and new metal welded in. It's a job.

i have had wheels much worse than that repaired and i still use them to this day.

I had a set and had them sandblasted and one looked like that when I got them back. There was a guy buying wire wheels like that a Chickasha one year. He was cutting the centers out and installing them in new wheels he was building.
His name was John McClaren(sp) from Michigan.

the bad news is they will likely look worse after sandblasting. I would like more info on this guy who buys rusted out ones... i have a few id like to move.

Mark, If you only have one lke that, I have one with a good rim but someone cut a large chunk of metal out of the center hub that the spokes are welded to and throws it off balance. If you're a good welder or know one, you could make one good out of two bad. I know a guy that could do it and I trust, but if he did it, you'de have more in the finished wheel that you can buy a new one for.

A big problem with any weld repair to that kind of rust damage is upsetting the balance of the wheel. I tried it once and gave up!

Allan, I can see what you mean, however if one were to stuff the rim full of fiberglass cloth through the rust hole and then saturate the fiberglass cloth with resin, it might not upset the balance so much.
