My T is stored for the winter, I have a new generator on order for it and have sent in my old one for a core.
My question is how much set up work is there to installing the new one? Where it is stored they don't want me working on it there.
It is ok to bolt in the new one before I start it but if I have to do many things before I start the engine they will not like it. Is it as simple as bolting it on and hooking the wire?
If the re-builder of your new generator has bench tested your unit, installation should be as simple as you stated. It would be ok to to simply bolt on (with a new gasket) and hook up the wire.
Later when you can run your car check for proper operation and current draw. Your generator should be putting out 8-10 Amps or 0 amps when the headlights are on. You may have to adjust your 3rd brush but that is simple to do.
If you install your generator without hooking up the cutout and battery, you need to ground the output so you won't burn up the generator. It is easy to ground it. Just run a short wire from the output terminal to one of the screws holding the end plate on the generator or one of the screws which would hold the cutout.
You don't need the generator to run the car. When you take it out of storage, drive it home and install the generator where you can take your time without being pestered.
If you run the car without the generator you will need to have block off plate installed so all the oil does not run out of the car. Also need a bolt and nut to hold the timer spring on.
