just finished cleaning, priming, painting my rear leaf springs and now the shackles will not fit because of the poly-slide between them!! If it wasnt for bad luck... id have none at all.
2 blocks of wood and a C-clamp should compress the spring leaves enough to get the shackles on. I'd say you got carried away.
thats a good idea. thanks
ive been butting my head against the wall on this project all day and im running out of good ideas
Poly slide, it that the plastic sheet stuff that you put between the leafs?
yup. just from initial reaction i think its good stuff.
You'll like the ride.
Another easy way to install the hangers is to loosen the nuts holding the rear perches, so the perches are where the hangers will reach them.
Nathan, do you mean the spring CLIPS which hold the spring leafs together? I can understand putting something between the leafs causing the spring pack to be too thick to take the clips.
The Shackles are the bits which attatch the spring to the rear axle. The other posters have given you ways to connect these.
Hope this helps.
Allan from down under.
yes, the clips. my mistake
If you can't clamp the spring tight enough to fit the clips, custom size clips should be easy to make, just a piece of strap steel, two bends, two holes and a thread. The bolt could be reused. I painted the leafs with a thick mix of graphite paint and had a hard time fitting the original clips with just paint (and grease) between them..
If the ride gets soft and bouncy, you may look at fitting Model A shocks since some of the usual friction dampening in the spring pack is lost..
Improving the Ford can give a better ride, but often also causes need for further modification

If i need to make the ride stiffer I will use the old race car method of wraping them with cord.
Nathan, I was really confused for a minute until Roger straightened you out. He is 100% right you do have to make new ones. 3/16 X 3/4 inch flat bar (available anywhere) is what I use. I have not had the bouncing problem that he mentioned but I do not cruise long distances. I also usually used the thicker gauge (mil) industrial Visqueen and never bought any of the product that was mentioned here. But again we did this in the 70;s and early 80's. good T'ing!
