By Doug Money - Braidwood, IL on Friday, February 08, 2013 - 04:53 pm:Coils running better on battery is a classic sign of coil problems. Have the coils tested on a HCCT, Strobo Spark, or ECCT.
By James A. Golden on Saturday, February 09, 2013 - 10:03 am:A few years ago I found that some of the later repro coils were made for a different machine that used them with 12 volts DC and they ran better on DC. The capacitors in those coils were also .23 mfds or half the normal .47 mfds.
I only recently learned that when I bought a StroboSpark that includes a capacitor size and leakage test capability. It also surprised me that just about all the original coils had bad capacitors. If they were the correct size, they still had excessive leakage current.
That machine that uses those newer 12 volt DC coils is called a Fairmont Speeder and is normally painted yellow. It also had railroad wheels and was used by crews for track repairs.
