I seem to have a lot of slop in the advance rod. I am going to starting to trouble shoot the issues. How much advance should I have from the full up to the full down position? Right now it just doesn’t seem to have much advance. Currently the first one fourth of the pull down the distributor does not move.

Steve, in a perfect scenario it should start to move as soon as you start to pull down. Usually the holes get oval with wear and can cause lots of slop. not sure of the setup you have with a distributor, but i would start there...post some pics if you can.

One place to look at is the timer itself. The rod to timer connection should be designed so that the rod cannot rotate. If the timer does not have this feature, quite a bit of lever movement will be spent rotating the timer rod, and not moving the timer.

It's like steering. A little slop here, a little slop there, here a slop, there a slop, everywhere a slop-slop, it all adds up. As John says, the ideal is none at all. A lot comes from holes worn big and the rods in them worn small. You can fill holes and redrill them.





Grind smooth and drill.

Getting as much slop out of this linkage is very important. It takes very small amount of timer radial movement to get the ignition timing off by several degrees.
If your one of the crowd who likes setting the initial timing a few degrees after TDC and too much slop exists it could lead to a hospital visit.
I believe this is one of the reasons I Ford originally set the initial timing at 15 degrees ATDC.
