A new topic for me, since it appears the '15 Touring is going to be ready for the Hendersonville tour thanks to all you great Model T guys and gals.

We also have a 1914 Roadster recently fitted with a top and side curtains, however they are NOT fitted correctly (the upholstery guy realizes this and offered to fix the error at no charge). I had taken some pictures of a 1914 Roadster top for him to use, but unfortunately not fully correct either and the kit from Cartouche did not have have the instruction sheet packed in the kit box.
I really need some detailed pictures of the properly installed side curtains for the '14 Roadster with the curtains inside the top irons and a way to enter/exit without outside assistance :-)
In addition, I have had problems with Cartouche top boots not fitting for the '15 (already ruined one trying to get it to fit, ordered a new one and it was also a no fit as well, so I returned it for credit) as well as this '14 Roadster. They are way too small to fit on without tearing the boot material. Has anyone had similar issues and if so, how did you get it to fit?

Thanks for any assistance.

Rod Marcom

I had the same problem with the Cartouche top boot on my '13 touring. Way too small, ripped it in half trying to install it.

I haven't heard anything positive about CarTouche. I have a friend who got one of their kits, and it was a joke. Their literature claims they have a lot of experience, but I wonder how true that actually is? I have another friend who bought side curtains from them, and had to send them back, because there was no way they would fit. I would contact Mark Cameron as above. Also, Elizabeth Estepp at Classtique has a very good reputation, and I would definitely contact her. As for myself, I make my own. That way I don't have to complain about my work!

I am assuming you are wanting factory correct side curtains. My own personal opinion is that I want side curtains that are easy to use and don't leak. I don't have a boot, but I do have a handy bag to protect my curtains when not mounted. Here are my curtains as designed by my upholstery and top guy. Please do not judge him by the top job on this car as I did that.

I like my curtains because they don't leak air or water around the windshield or anywhere else. The zippered roll up door curtain is very handy. Two modern snaps were used at the top of the windshield plus I had to remove two of the turn buttons on the side of the body. Either the bows were too narrow or the body was too wide.

Thanks Fred ! Thats exactly what I needed . .. and Rodney thanks you too. I just finished a '14 runabout and, while I try to be a fair weather driver, a set of curtains would've come in handy at the Tyler Texas T Party last October. MAN, you really have a blue engine! What about that step plate? Something original you found at a swap meet? That '13 runabout sure turned out purty. I used your pics from the Tulsa web site when I installed my JV top. Thanks !!
On the subject of a top boot; I took the torn 30 year old long grain top boot from my '23 touring to a local furniture upholstery shop and told him where I needed a new one just a little larger. Picked it up 3 days later for $37.

Thank you Fred for the great pictures and I like the visibility of those a LOT!!!!. By the way, I got the web site where you showed how to install the top from Dan Trease and that helped immensely for my upholstery guy to get the top on correctly. I just wish now that I had known of the JV Group before buying that Cartouche mess. I really think I'll return the curtains for credit and have my upholstery guy make curtains like yours (if you don't mind me copying your idea :-)
I assume the zippered door cover is zippered on both sides and has snaps at the bottom on the inside of the car?? Did he put one similarly on the driver's side for hand signals?

Thanks George for the idea for the remake of the top boot. I'll take my old torn one in and have that done, return the one I bought for the Roadster and have him make one to fit it as well.

Thank you very much indeed :-)

Rod Marcom

Hi Rod,

There is no opening for hand signals as I have turn signals. If you look real closely, the tiny double throw switch can be seen at the front of the left arm rest.

Fred
