Without a doubt, an extremely rare piece. Do you coleect Tydol stuff, or are you just interested in the fuel guage?

I sent this link to a friend of mine. Here is his reply...
"hey thunder..yes i have seen one a few yrs ago,but that was the only time...a old timer had it at a tractor auction..he had model a`s and model t`s etc.....it sold at his auction and i got just a brief glance at it,,it happened so quickly i just didn`t see what it really was and it was gone..we were there for the auction...i think that is a extremely rare piece,,i`ll bet some old timers on the east cost would know more...."

I would think, that it would be easy enough to reproduce the guage in cast aluminum, with a flange on the top, then rivet it to the cap. Please keep uo posted on any progress.

Looks like it was stamped and then riveted to the cap.

I saw this one, and was just interested in a fuel gauge connected to my cap!

My 16 had this type gas cap gauge when I got it. It was not working, so I broke off the bottom part, and just used the cap to close the tank. I had no idea they were so rare. Bad move on my part

How was the gauge not working, Kent?

I was mistaken. Mine was a different type. It had a float that moved, and operated a gauge on the cap.

Hi Jim and All

The gauge appears to be the same as the
one covered by the patent below, however
I would hazard a guess the one in your photo
was a reward or a premium, to be sold or given
to regular customers of Tydol gas stations.
A search will turn up examples of a wooden
measuring stick with the Tydol name on it as well.
Both may well have been marketed as accessories
in a no-name style as well.

They are cast aluminum in one piece. I have one in my 26 Fordor and dad has a better one in his collection of Ford stuff (that I wish I'd kept for my 15). They appear to have been for oval tanks, but if you are just interested in if there is fuel there, they work for any car. Both of these two came from Rhinebeck NY Flea about 20-25 years ago - different vendors & different years, same area dealer must have given a lot of them out??? I keep looking for a third for my 15, but without luck.

The top reads "More Air - Less Gas" around the Tydol logo too...

If you drive at all, the gas will splash all over the markings. Did you have to wipe it off first?

I have not had any problems - the finish is just rough enough to hold the gas for a few seconds and then it drips or dries off. It takes me longer to get my but out of the car, pull the seat out and the cap off - by then it reads fine.
