A Highway Patrol motorcycle officer writing a ticket alongside the San Diego (405) Freeway was struck and critically injured today when a driver went onto the right shoulder to bypass traffic, authorities said.

Three other people were also hurt in the 8:45 a.m. crash, which occurred when an Infiniti sedan struck the officer and his motorcycle, along with the Honda SUV he had stopped on the northbound 405 at National Boulevard, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Mark Garrett said.

"... I can tell you his injuries were very serious,' Garrett said of the injured officer, a 27-year CHP veteran assigned to the West Los Angeles office in Culver City.

The force of the crash crushed the officer's motorcycle and flipped the SUV, Garrett said.

Doug's reply is on the money.

KCAL9 is now owned by KCBS2, and together they provide nearly continuous news coverage. The 405 was shut down for quite awhile today.

We don't often see cars illegally driving the shoulders here, unlike some other cities. The Infiniti driver will get used to riding the bus, I'm sure.

My prayers to go out to the Officer and families.

Last month I was taking the Flyaway from the Valley over the hill to LAX around 8:30 am. I counted about 6 people texting.

Don't get your hope up, Bob. It's illegal to use a cell phone (except hands free) or to text while driving here in the Golden State (California). I see it done every day anyway. It seems many just do not care until something bad happens.

It's also against the law to drive over the speed limit in most states but that hasn't stopped a lot of folks yet. The texting and cell phone laws will get about the same response.

Yep, and they change lanes in California sometimes six at a time. Been there and have seen it - too many times. Sounds like this driver couldn't count and ended up taking someone out on the shoulder.

We have so many aliens driving here, it's a wonder it isn't worse. It would sure help if the rural flatlanders among them stayed away...

Yep, blame it on the aliens. And the Chinese imports too, as long as you're at it. :-)

Good thing I kept my tired old German coffee maker when the new one arrived from Gevalia. This Communist Chinese made gem didn't last 3 weeks. The Hindu on the phone said not to send it back for repair; they're replacing it.

Here in Jersey, a state trooper was killed along the highway after he pulled over to examine an abandoned car and then found a woman hiding in the woods. She claimed a man had been riding with her and bailed out into the woods to hide. He was supposed to be armed and both had committed a string of crimes together.

Massive man hunt with emergency vehicles and armored cars. Car comes along and hits the officer and kills him. Nothing done to the driver of that car, but the original woman is facing manslaughter charges.

Back in 68, right after High School, a very good friend of mine drove off the NB405 at Nordoff at over 90 mph. Him and his girlfriend wrapped a 57 Ranchero around a telephone pole down the enbankment. Killed em both.
Now they have "sound" barriers.

Texting, talking on the cell all illegal down here in Victoria Australia as well as the other states too, l was watching live and could see the five lanes blocked for what l'd imagine was 5 miles ???, good to see the police allowing the backenders to cut out thru the gap in the centre to find another path, sadly by that stage also all blocked up.
Q/- is that the freeways congestion (allowing for the accident ) most days ????

David.

sorry to hear of the accident that severe due to ignorance and stupidity on the part of the driver. The book aint enough to throw at that person.

in the discussion of texting and phoneing, the highway patrolman that struck my foot in 94 with his right rear hub cap as I slipped and fell in the road behind my state truck, was busy flying on ice and talking on his radio to relize he hit me.
And the time I was run off in the ditch on 601 by a deputy talking on the radio.
I am all for the no text and phone while driveing. It is sad that a law has to be written about something that should be common sense.

Only thing,I would just like to see it apply to ALL drivers regardless of thier dutys.
What will really flip your lid is to be a passenger in a heavy truck on a 4 lane and go by a highway patrolman and look down and see he is playing solitare while driveing on his console mounted computer.

Girl I know, late 20's, never texts while driving. Cruising the internet and writing emails on her iphone, yes, but never texting.

It is a dangerous world.

I relize common sense is extinct now but it looks like someone would fiqure out,if you dont make these devices that text, surf and such while driveing,it couldnt be done.
I am hopeing to check into a new mobile phone service that is mostly for the older crowd but they offer a big button BASIC phone that aint got all the whistles and bells and graphics. But it will make a PHONE call.

I was driving the 23 back from where it had been in storage last night. A local black and white was in the left lane and I in the right behind him at about 35 mph. The officer, without a signal, pulled across in front of me and made a right turn into the side street. No lights, sirens etc. He didn't even race up the street. Thank God for the Rockies on the back or I'd have clipped him in the rear.

Seems like every time I'm in the Bay Area or L.A there are people passing on the shoulder. I try to avoid those places at all costs. A while back, a co-worker's wife totaled their 1970 240Z while passing slow traffic on the San Rafael Bridge on the shoulder in a rainstorm. Man, was he smoked. ABS brakes, cupholders, automatic overdrive transmissions, sound deadeners, and power everything make it easy to be a bad, bad driver and still survive. If these youngsters had to drive a three-on-the-tree, manual steering, manual brake, no cup holder '61 Plymouth or the like, they would have to actually spend all their time DRIVING the car rather than GUIDING the car!!!

The technology is available to: 1. make hand held phones NOT work unless in a dock in the car, 2. make texting not work in the car unless the car is not moving, 3. make the radio volume go way down if the dock mounted phone is in use.

Most of us just don't have legislatures with enough internal fortitude to force this on automobiles. And we keep voting these same people into office, year after year after year.

I see just as many gray haired, and or blue haired people doing these things as I do youngsters.

I and my family try to drive our 26 Fordoor at times when we think that most of the drunks and dopies are home sobering up, or coming down.

No offense, Seth, but you kinda have to live here to fully grasp the "alien" thing. The last time I got t-boned in an intersection all I got was "no hablo ingles, no mi car, I pay you $5.00 a month. It's rampant and you ain't goin' to get no satisfaction.

Coincidentally, my friend just told me about one of his workers who took great pride in his pickup. It was confiscated when he couldn't show a cop his proof of insurance.

I remember the first time I received a call in the car, many years ago. I was so distracted I pulled off the boulevard. Now it's no more distracting than talking to my passenger.

What you cannot adapt to is anything that takes your eyes off the view ahead, such as dialing, texting, or GPS. The Pioneer GPS in our car won't let you key in an address unless it is stopped, with park brake set. However, it's still a distractor, as it's a combo unit mounted too low in the dash. The best GPS is one mounted in your primary field of view that takes only a change of focus to see.

Not to mention spilling coffee in your crotch...

Guys: I never stop on the interstate any more. Back in 93 the wife and I had gone to an auction in KY. Luckily we did not buy anything, prices too high for a cheap T guy. Next morning, leave motel and head home. Five miles down the road, left front tire blows out. Pull off interstate on to the grass to change. Just about finished and next thing I know F250, 16 foot dual axle trailer and wife are 130 feet down the interstate and I am getting up out of the ditch. Three boys were driving nonstop from upper Wisc to Macon Ga and the driver fell asleep. Said he never saw us till he came too up side down out in field. So I will not stop on the interstate for anyone! Dan
