I know this is almost a ridiculous request, but if there is an easy answer, it sure escapes me!

Somewhere along the line, my driver side lamp hinge PIN decided to crack and fall out. Fortunately, the running board caught the first bounce of the lid and it rolled off from there saving real damage (something about Einstein or Newton or one of those I think), but I did watch in the mirror as it rolled away on the road like a yo-yo. Stopped the car, found it, hardly know it took a bounce and the glass didn't shatter. A little buffing compound set it straight.

Looked high and low for a 'soft' rivet that small and that long that would work...no dice, catalogues, nothing.

Came up with a short term solution. Found a long box nail of the same diameter, slid it thru marked the end. Cut it off so that just a bit woould stick out inboard, split the end of the shank, slid it in, bucked it, and wedged open my 'bobby pin' end. Hinge worked, have to put your nose to it to notice it...but it still wants to walk out on longer runs...can't splay it open any more as it will damage the hinge itself.

I am sure that I am not the first to experience this :-):-)

I could do another box nail with some really small cotters I have, but I would want it to look 'right'

FWIW, these lamps also look like they have never been 'burned'. I figure the wick font just had to be replaced somewhere along the line but can find no evidence of burn anywhere else on the insides. So...I don't want to kluge too much of a fix.

What's the fix???? Make a paper washer, glob it with JB and file it to size and then just pull out paper? Open to all suggestions and if I have to buy a box of rivets I will, just tell me where.

I have used electric dent puller studs in the past for hinge pins. They are made of copper with a nice round head, usually a 2-3 inch shaft with many different diameters. Looks just like a long rivet. Just cut them to length you need. Perfect for early brass light hinges too. HarborFreight usually carries a mixed size box of them.

Ed,

Thank you so much for that idea, I'll go and check it out!
