I've got a bit of a quandary.
My 1922 Touring "T" has 21 x 4.4/4.5 demountables on the rear and 31 x 3 1/2 non-demountables on the front.
From what I have been able to gather, the car could have came either way, as demountables were an option?
The problem is, this makes carrying a spare tire rather difficult! (unless I were to carry 2)
I also have 1 front wheel that has a few cracked spokes, one of them now loose).
I'm working on a plan to hopefully get that wheel respoked locally, but don't want to miss any more of the touring season than I have to.
Basically, I'm looking for someone who may want to trade a pair of wheels, sell a pair, or at the least I would like to buy 1 30x3 1/2, preferably, with the tire mounted and ready to go that I can use while repairing the damaged one.

Oh, and, I'm on a tight budget. :-)

I'm located in Cincinnati, OH

Thought my request was a bit exotic for the classifieds.....

Pictures of the car can be seen here. My tires have full tread on them.(please ignore the stains on the wheels...I had just driven it home from a car show in the rain the previous day and only had time to mop it off- she has since been tidied up!)

Brian,

I don't think the 21" demountable wheels were used until 1923 or 1924. If I were you I would look for a complete set of 30 X 3 1/2" demountable wheels and rims. They are correct for your car.

Thanks Royce...I just checked the Encylopedia and it looks like 1925 was the first year for the 21" as an option.

I am a bit confused though....for '22 it states, 30 x 3 in the front and 30 x 3 1/2 for the rear. If these were all non-demountable, what would you carry as a spare, or were spares typically only for the demountable wheels?

Brian, the encyclopedia is correct. In the early years of producton (non-demountable wheels), the two different sizes were used on front and rear, and they are different enough in size that they cannot be mounted by swapping rims. I think in the era, owners didn't carry a mounted spare wheel, but rather just carried one of each size of tire and tube and made the tire mount on the road if the original tube couldn't be patched. If originality is not a problem, I would look for a set of 30X3 1/2 demountable wheels and rims that would use the same size of tire. When I bought my 16 touring, this had been done by the previous owner, but I converted it back original.

Brian-
30x3 1/2 Rear /30x3 Front for non starter cars
30x3 1/2 all around for starter cars (demountables)

Depends on whether you want to have your car completely stock or not. The stock car would have 30" x 3" non-demountables on the front and 30" x 3 1/3" non-demountables on the rear. It was also an option that year to have 30" x 3 1/2" demountables all the way around with one spare rim and tire for quick change on the road.

The non demountables must be changed on the car and can cause a delay if you have a flat on the road.

The lowest price thing to do would be to purchase two 4.50" 21" wheels and one rim (or 3 wheels so you have a spare wheel as well) and replace the front wheels.

Or you could replace all 4 wheels with the 30" x 3 1/2" de-mountables with a spare rim and tire. This would be the best and most stock way to repair your car. The lowest price would be the first, and the highest price but stock would be to buy two 30" x 3 1/2" non-demountables for the back and one 30" x 3" non-demountable for the front. The non-demountable wheels are best repaired by a wheel wright. It is quite expensive and when you are all done, you will still have to carry 2 spare tires and change by the roadside if you have a flat tire.

Whatever you do, you should match the wheels on each axle. Same size for both fronts, and same size for both rears.

Norm

I took a little trip today out to visit Ken Edmondson.
What a great guy!
Gave me a good deal on a set of 21" demountable wheels and a good hours worth of "T" education as well.

I hope to be back on the road by the end of the weekend! (Buick duty calls tomorrow :-) )

I am however, now on the prowl for a spare wheel carrier that will mount on my '22 Touring as well as a rim clamp tool for removing/mounting the tires.

Thanks again Ken!

Brian, Thank you. I enjoyed the visit. Come back anytime. I looked through my stash at Uncle Jacks and didn't see any of the stuff you need. Post a message asking for pictures for the 21" demountable spare tire carrier you need so you know what your looking for.
