I just replaced the grease cups on the ujoint and right behind it I guess the driveshaft slip-joint, with alemite fittings. I feel there hasn't been any grease added for quite awhile. Any thoughts on how much I should put in. After removing the cup on the ujoint I looked inside with a flashlite and it looked kinda bare but not dry.

Carl, IMO you can't over grease the ball cap. I like to see some grease working out, also if the ball cap is worn a little to much it helps keep engine oil from migrating to the rear end. Have fun, KB

You can't put too much grease at the U-Joint, there should be packed full all the time.

When I hook-up an engine to the rear end, that inside space and the U-Joint knuckle gets packed full, to the point where the U-Joint square shank can't limp down when inserting it into the trans drive shaft. (Rather easy to engage that way :-) )

There after re-grease each 500 miles, just like the Owners Manual Instruction book says. Pull and pack that cup till your fingers get tired, and you can see gobs of grease pushing past the drive shaft cup. If you use a zerk and handgun, it goes faster :-)

Thank you, that is pretty much what I figured, but I thought it better to ask than do wrong!

Can U-joints be rebuilt?

I have one where the rivets are loose. Can it be saved?

Most times if the rivets are loose, then the knuckle journals are egg shaped or worn too much for service.

Would think it more economical to just buy the new repro u-joint, they are good.

Fitting the new ones sometimes needs a brief filing or sanding to check fit onto the driveshaft and into the trans shaft. Other than that, the new U-joints are the way to get the best results.

Carl,
I asked that same question to Tom Carnegie The Great nearly two months ago. I was at his shop and added that I use a zirk fitting inside my U Joint grease cup. Forty One (41) pumps of a grease gun was his answer.

I don't want to be critical but, I think I saw Tom do 42.5 pumps once. Probably depends on what brand of grease gun is used.

Full, full, full is best. Whatever it takes.

Whilst on this subject,
I guess a real thick grease would be the best.
Any comments.....

I use regular chassis lube grease for mine. As far a u-joints go I always try to find tight ones at swap meets. Haven't ever had a problem with that.
