I hold the cap with vice grips and melt the babbitt into the melting pot leaving just a little so I dont have to tin the surface Then I polish off the thrust surfaces on a disc sander and coat with flux put it in the tool heat it up and pour I hope this answers some questions you didnt ask

So they can be poured at home? But they would need machining, right? Can the pouring metal be bought easily?

You will want to use a tin based babbit not lead. I think there might be a conversation on babbit on Fordbarn under Model A's.

You will want to use new babbitt. The old babbitt is OK for fish line sinkers.

None of the babbitt formulas that I have found contained any lead. They are mostly tin and tin is rather expensive now.

United American Metals makes different kinds of babbitt. You will want to use "Government Genuine" This babbitt is 89% tin with the remainder being copper and antimony. There is no lead. This is very close to what Henry would have used. Here is a link to their web site. http://uamet.com/p1.htm

There are many different kinds or grades of babbitt, #2 is most commonly used for bearings in automotive applications.

I'm in no way connected to this company but I have used their products with good results.

Mike

The website does not show prices or minimum amounts required for a purchase.

Is there any information avalable on those details?

James, You will have to contact them as I believe that prices will fluctuate from day to day depending on market prices. You may also be able to do a search for vendors of this product.
