This is what I found when I pulled my 4th main bearing on our '26.

It looks like the clutch spring is comming un-wound.

This is my first T. If anyone else has had this problem, please let me know.Clutch Spring (I think)

Thanks in advance!!, Eric

Only time I've heard of that happening is with the spring initially supplied with the Watts clutch. If that's the case, purchase another spring from the vendors rated at 110lbs and you'll be fine.

Richard:

I believe that all the Watts Clutch springs were round not flat.

Watts problem springs are round. That spring looks like it got really hot.

Not sure what happened, but would like to see a view from the top. If your creative and careful the spring can be replace with out removing the hog head, engine, etc...

Tinkering Tips Vol II pg 93 shows a home made spring compresser that can be used with engine in car. Has anyone used it? Or come up with something simular?

I can't tell what it is, but it looks like something in front of the spring is broken. Let us know what else is wrong after you get it apart.

Eric,

I may be the angle but it looks like the spring retaining pin is loose or broken. It looks like it's at a weird angle in your photo??

May have caused the spring to come loose.

The Clutch Spring is out. I want to thank everyone who helped me out. Especially Gary White who sent the picture out of Tinkering Tips. I was going to use Gary's idea but I could not find any 3/8"-24 all-thread here in Kanab. So I made my own compressor that worked fine.

The spring is badly bent. Larry is correct, the retaining pin was/is bent also. I am replacing both parts.

Thanks again!

Eric

Just as I suspected, the culprit is the infamous Watts spring. A common problem. The vendors carry a strong 110 lb spring that folks running Watts clutches use. That's what you need since no doubt you have the Watts clutch.

I like the tools you made up. You should make more and sell them.

I am impressed. But how did you get the pin out? If I recall correctly you have to get the spring positioned just right so the hole in the retaining basket is not blocked and then drive it out with a punch. How can you do that with the transmission cover in the way???
