Perhaps a rookie question; the first T rear axle assembly that I have had apart. Doing a general clean up and replacement of any worn out parts.
The little fiber washer I have that came out of between the ends of the two axles, right in the middle of the differental measures .087. What is the proper thickness for this thing, does it matter that much??

I have read a bunch of previous posts by searching and think I understand how to size this spacer. No help needed after all.
There is not an exact thickness. Put the differential back together and make sure the axles have no endplay. If they do have endplay buy two new fiber washers. You will have to sand the washers to get a perfect fit. The axles should not have any endplay but should turn freely when the differential is bolted back together. Also make sure there is not too much gap between the axle shaft gear and the differential case.
I use a brass washer instead. The fiber piece does not seem really sturdy to me. The brass washer serves the same function.
To answer your question, yes .087" is the correct thickness. The ones the vendors sell are too thin, .065" if memory serves. I just finished a rear end and made a disc out of nylon, it was .095" thick. A little thinner would have been fine.
