What keep the rain from comming between the window glass and the door? I have heard of metal strips with rubber in them to seal the glass. Does anybody have a picture of what is used in a 26 coupe door?

Thanks,
Stephen

On the tudor it as the medal and rubber at the top. On the sides it has a felt and medal piece. At the bottom it has nothing. This I think is way so many of the doors are rusted out on bottom. I do believe the 26/27 tudor, coupe, and 28/29 Model A closed truck all us the same doors.

Gary,

The 26 - 27 closed cars used this piece:

http://www.modeltford.com/item/8020.aspx

It fits into the metal channel along the bottom of the window glass, then the glass fits into it. It has a lip on the outside edge. When the window is rolled up, the rubber lip on the outside edge hits the bottom of the window opening in the door to make the seal.

So is this rubber piece a new design? When I removed the original windows I do not remember a lip.

I don't believe such a piece was installed in the factory so this would be an aftermarket piece designed much later when it was determined that there was a problem (which there is) and that there was a market for it.

Neither of my '26's was equipped with such a piece and, as a result, the coupe had a 4" rusted out area at the bottom of each door where the rainwater puddled and remained. The Fordor was apparently garage kept for its' entire life because the body and wood is just as solid as the day it left the factory, or it would have probably rotted out as well.

I'm pretty sure this was originally there. The 24 - 25 Coupes had a seal there. It was a metal strip with a length of rubber crimped in and was mounted to the inside door between the window and door frame just below the bottom of the window opening. When the window was raised, the bottom metal glass channel contacted this rubber to make the seal. This continued to be used on the 26-27 Fordor (at least on the quarter windows).

From the parts book:

P/N 18850 - Strip - Door Window Weather and Retainer - 24-25
P/N 18801 - Strip - Door Window Weather - 24-25
P/N 18504 - Strip - Door Window Weather - 24 Tudor

The seal was changed for the 26-27 Coupe and Tudor and apparently for the doors on the Fordor.

P/N 50424 - Strip - Door Window Weather 26-27 Coupe and Tudor.
P/N 18819 - Strip - Door Window Weather 26-27 Fordor

There is more to it than this if you look at the seals used on the quarter windows. Also some of the dates listed seem to be missing years. Unfortunately, I don't have the time right now to sit and analyze all of it. The bottom line is that the 24-25 cars definitely had a seal at the bottom of the window, and the parts book lists a seal for the 26-27 cars, so I'm pretty sure there was a seal there originally. I have samples of the seals from the 24-25 cars, but I don't have a sample or photo of the 26-27 style. I had always thought that the seal I indicated was the correct one. If it was something else, please let me know.

My 26 coupe was as described by Jim the doors were rusted out and i did not find anyplace to attach the metal channel for the wiper,on my 24 Fordor with the wood doors the channels were all there so i replaced the rubber window wiper in the doors and quarter windows, the rubber is not correct but it can be used with a little stretching a some silicone spray.

On my 27 tudor (engine date Oct. 26 sold Jan 27) it had a cloth type material between glass and medal channel. This was in both doors and quarter windows. This car has been in the family since 1930 and untouched since late 30s till a couple of years ago.

My 27 Coupe has a channel for this rubber seal (see Sosnoski above) and was originally equipped with it.
It was too hard and crumbly to reuse so I did without. Now that I know such a thing is available, I will replace it.
