I just bought a 1924 coupe and went to inspect the bands and found this.
Appears to be one where the oil was filtered by a wire mesh screen. Doesn't appear that this held up, I guess that is why the switch to the current screen.
The screen has either been cut off or rusted off but I cannot see any remains in the transmission. A magnet will pickup the remains of the screen so I am afraid that the pieces might be attached to the magneto magnets.
Any suggestion on the best way to check for the pieces.

Probably a car that sat for a loooong time and all the oil dripped to the bottom leaving the top of the hogsheads nice and dry. Throw in temperature changes and it's not hard to believe that condensation may have caused this.
Maybe glyptal the inside of your hogshead and the screen assembly. At least some good paint.
Just order a new screen from any T vendor. They are not that expensive. For now, I would use the cover without the screen. It isn't doing you any good, and it may spit out more metal peices.

What is/was in the bottom of the pan when you removed the oil drain plug? I think I'd pull the hogs head. If the screen did rust away in the trans, I'd be concerned with the remenants being in the oil funnel and stuck all over the magnets.
Charlie: judging from the photo that screen looks like it was removed. The edges of it facing us in the pic look fresh (not rotted). That's a pretty sizeable piece of screen. It could be chopped up but if you get nothing with a stick magnet and an oil change and it runs OK on mag. you're probably safe. But I would check it out carefully.
