Time to do some maintenance on Nellybell. The fan bushing were getting loose and so was the crankshaft pulley. I had to pull the radiator so it and the block got a flush. Got the new bushings in the fan and honed to fit, re-shimmed the crankshaft pulley.
The radiator, I run 50/50 mix, lots of rust and scale. Ran the water till clear.
When I took the car out Friday I noticed the brake peddle was going to the floor.
This is where the BTDT starts. I pulled the bands, quick change, my eye! The brake band was getting thin so I am just going to swap them around for now, moving the brake to reverse. I got the brake and low back in, but the reverse was a fight, it is still not pulled around to hook up (it was but read on).
Yes it happen, even had the rags in the transmission, but don't you know the nut found the only spot I missed.
Pulled the inspection cover, got oil every where but in the drain pan. I need to check the rods anyway. At 8:30 I had enough.
Now for a question, I noticed that the reverse drum moves back and forth a little over 1/8 inch. How concerned should I be?

A bit much, but not uncommon and I have seen and run ones with more forward and back.
Did you get the nut out?
Drive carefully, W2

Drain out the oil first before you turn the car over to get out the nut! Sometimes you can be lucky if you are able to hook it with something or possibly put a rag around the transmission and rotate it. Note, rotate it with the rear wheels jacked and in high gear so the rag won't get caught in the triple gears.

Did not even try today. This is where the BTDT comes in. Wont be the first time I have done it. :-)
I'll get back to it Monday. Thanks for the info on the gap. It's one of those, humm don't recall seeing that before.

Mark,

If you do not have the mag windings and the magnets, you can reach the bottom of the crankcase with your hand through the inspection plate on the bottom. Its a little bit of a reach, but can be done. Have to rotate the crankshaft to get to the entire bottom. Also, have plenty of bandaids at hand, the cotter pins on the rods are sharp.

Neil
