John,

you have automatic updates set on your regular computer op system, or do you have system maintance set to run automatically?

Either or are known to blow out saved cookie items, which is what and where your log in and passwords are stored.

Retyping should restore the functionality, unless one of your settings from auto update included a 'clear all' on closing command

TIME OUT....haha...went to click 'post' and MY box is blank!

NEVERMIND

If I find something, I'll post again :-)

Hmmmm....

Google chrome has it blank also, but I think Chrome shares as bunch with IE and you can never really delete all of IE either.

My password was there this morning and is gone this evening. As I was ready to post this message my username and password are gone again.

I ran no updates today. I first thought something changed when I added my city and state to my posted name. I looked at my preferences and it still shows to save my username and password.

Something has happened today.

Maybe there is a system change. I was just going to post a "test" to determine a few system settings and when I started to enter my username a small box appeared. When I fully typed my username I had to enter my password. Then I cleared out my username and typed my first leter on the username and then clicked on my username in the box, low and behold my password appeared.

Now, here's the interesting thing. The same thing is happening to me over on the MFCTI site?
When I have something strange going on with my desk top I fire up my lap top with a broad band card and eliminate everything to do with my house computer. Same thing going on on that one?

I had a couple extra problems. I very recently changed web servers, and I couldn't remember which of my numerous passwords I used.
I tried everything I could think of. I tried to contact Bruce but I doubt he's up fooling around all night like I am, so I've yet to get a reply.
Finally I just re-registered. I've been posting here for years but according to my profile, this is my second post.
I'll get arouns to filling out my (new) profile later. My car is going to be in a parade in a couple hours. still have to log in with each post.

Bruce,

I checked, my other autofill log ons still have what it takes.

Was there a change this weekend in the MTFCA architecture? Seems to me that the first page after the home page has something different....either font, or layout...this is the page where you select which forum you want. Seems to me that 'forum 2010' was a whole lot more easier to pick, may be me though...getting older, but still trying :-)

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Neil Kaminar on Monday, September 06, 2010 - 11:46 am:

Fred,

The architecture of the Mac computer is fundamentally different than a Windows computer. It does not allow programs to be installed without the user's permission. Granted that security is still needed, but the Mac does not have the "open architecture" that the Windows based computers do. BTW, I am not a computer expert, so I might be a little wrong in the details.

My beef with Mickysoft is that they keep adding features without improving the basic performance of the software. In fact, they make it more error prone and less usable. From time to time I am forced to use Windows on my Mac to run certain programs, but when running Window, it is never connected to the internet.

Neil

Seth, it's a very minor problem. Up until a few days ago, when I was at the "Add a Message" box, my name and password were already filled in for me. Now they no longer are. If I double-click on the Username box, I am given a choice of user names (that I have used in the past for this or other websites, I guess). I click on the top one and it fills in both Username and Password and I am good to go. If I forget, it won't accept the message because I haven't supplied the necessary data. Once I do, it's happy again.

My experience has been the same as Dick's: automatically filled in username and password until the past couple of days. I've posted a couple of messages on other threads tonite, and I have to enter the username and password each time. If I double-click on the username box, it gives me the name. But the password box stays blank, even if I double click on it. And I don't get any prompt asking me whether I want them saved. I did not change my username to add my location; it has been there for quite a while. Apparently Mac users aren't having this problem.

OK gang, can't fix it but can report on the latest findings.

When you get a blank username, try clicking once in the white of the box to set the cursor, then double-click and your user name will show as a selection. Click that selection to fill in the user name, and then the password auto fills. That's where I am at today. :-)

As far as my comment yesterday about another issue? I know what it was, don't know why it happened though...it gave me a frames version of the where do you want to go page, and before I could figure it out it reverted to a page version like normal.

FWIW Bruce, there was no reason for an embedded frame in my temp files as I have never seen a frame on ANY of the MTFCA pages. On the frame version Forum 2010 is a pick in the middle of the stack, where on the regular it is the top pick....geez I thought I was going crazy! I do think something on the MTFCA server was adjusted, renested or rebooted.

My guess is somewhere on the server there is a command line that says a page call at www.mtfca/discus/messages/xxxx brings in the cookie and autofills the page when the browser is IE. (On Mac's and the Firefox etc., your cookies are stored in a different way and the load on page call may be done local and automatic and not by the host server). In IE that instruction is not executing, and with the click/double click/select/autofill it goes and finds it manually.

There may be an IE bug that went through and got us all, but so far my other pages for other things still autofill.

FWIW also, my computer is my life pretty much so I have lots more scrubbers than most. My registry is constantly scrubbed to keep my speed, then its srubbed again by another. Overkill, I know but I need that level. Last night based on the maybe a virus...I set it into a deep scan and cleanse through a lava soft product which usually catches even 'innocents' the others leave behind. Took near 10 hours...clean as a whistle based on y'days dat files. May run again tonight after it does a new .dat lockup.

If double-clicking on the username space does not work for you and you don't remember your username and password, I reall can't help you at this end. I have sent the following message to those who have e-mailed me:

Apparently this is a bug in Microsoft Explorer which deletes the username and password from your computer. The usernames and passwords are still valid on the Forum database. While I can change passwords, I can't see what they were because they are hidden files. Usernames are visible so tell me what password you want to use and I'll fix it for you. It may take some time since this problem is so wide-spread and it takes a bit of time to access and change each profile.
Bruce
