The front wheel bearings are bad on the brass T. They are, of course, the old ball bearings. All the races are badly worn. It looks like getting the races out of the hub will be a problem. Is it possible? I was thinking that I will have to find some later hubs that accept the Timken roller type as it is my understanding you can not get replacement ball bearings. Yes replacement hubs will not be correct for the car but this idea is sounding better and better the more I think about it.
After swapping the hubs, I could try and rework the old ones so they will take the Timken rollers? Please advise accordingly and Thanks. Dex
You can get the races out. Make a screwdriver shaped punch about a quarter inch or so wide, tapered on one side only. There should be enough lip you can angle the punch so it work slip and drive them out. Others have welded on them one way or another to remove them. Patience and persistence will be needed.
So the outside race should be driven out from inside of the wheel? and vice versa for the inner race?
Getting the ball bearing races out is not a big problem. After you get the Timkens in, you won't be able to get them out. Hershey is coming up. Maybe you can find some ball bearing races there.
I used a punch that I modified by grinding to clear the lip on the inside of the wheel. Work the punch around on the race so that it does not jam.
I am happy with the tapered roller bearings.

I have removed Timken races from early hubs as I described above. To facilitate removal, one could also grind a pair of notches before the new races are installed.
