Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2010: Reproduction "Universal Car" sign

Does anyone reproduce the Winged Pyramid sign as produced originally?

I'm trying to find one that's not rectangular with a white background like the reproductions I see often.

Originals are out of my price range!

Thanks

Have only seen the white with dark blue reproductions, wish too these were made with black background and white logo or the reverse....don't like that 'Model A Blue' on my T parts! :-)

Both Snyder's and Mac's offer the winged universal car sign without the white background, at least they look like the are cut to the shape of the winged logo. Maybe they aren't as big as the originals, but I bet the ones with the white background on a rectangular metal sign aren't either.

I tried to get this one but it wouldn't fit in my suitcase:-)

Ford Sign

By the way, you may check with Chaffin's as well. I think I saw some being made up.

For a wide variety of nice vintage reproduction porcelain steel signs, including the one you seek, see www.anderooney.com. Click "Browse Catalog" then click "Automobile". The sign you want is on the third page. Jim Patrick

They made a nice one about 40 years ago. It is the correct size too. The only problem they had was the blue was a shade too light.

Thanks for the input!

I may just break down and make one it'll give me something to do when it gets cold this winter.

As you probably know, the Winged Pyramid is a stylized scarab, which Henry loved for years - until he found out the scarab is the Dung Beetle. It eats dung and lays its eggs there, from what I just heard on tv.

When I had the O/D and stuff torn out of the ol' brass picup, I found a dead scarab under it. Then when I got it back together, and even before the first test drive - I found a live one. Is that magical?

Was it the same one? Never know.
The Egyptians believed they had magical qualities.

What size are you looking for? You could burn out any size and paint it any color you like. I could do it for you but then I can't sell it to you, I would get in trouble!

Bill Stipe,
I like your sign.....but I love your 280 cam. It's been in our 13 touring for 5 yrs. and performes great. You could up the cost of each new cam and provide the sign.."Free" with each purchase. Smile!
Thanks, Les in Fallbrook, Ca.

The problem with the Ande Rooney signs is the small size. They have some Ford signs, but I didn't find this one on their website.

What's the size of the original signs? The oval sign was 16" x 24", but I've never seen an original of this one to measure.

Did Ford reup the copyright on this? If not it should not be a problem.

I expect the Ford script name is still copyrighted, so that would be a problem.

Luke,
There was a gentleman at Hershey that is making the Winged Pyramid sign in the style that you are looking for. His website is:

Brad,

Thank you!!!!! I had bought a couple signs from this man at a show here in FL a couple years back, but couldn't find his card when I was looking to order a couple for Christmas gifts. I see he added to his offerings.

Looks like I need to make a new wish list.

Thanks to everyone else as well, this is a fun thread.

There are several on ebay that are not rectangular shaped. I admit to not knowing what an "authentic" version of this shaped sign would be. There is also a double sided one complete with hanger. Search for "universal car" sign including the quotation marks and you should see all the various shapes and prices on ebay. Like this one:

That 14" x 34" one on ebay is a big one! I wish folks made them in black and white, rather than blue and white. Of course, all the old pics of them are not in color, so we don't know for sure whether they were blue or black. Who has seen an old original porcelain one and knows about the color?
