I just bought a Gas Tank Cover #2902-COV2 for a '24-'25 coupe and fordor from Lang's.It says that the ends are attached to the tool box boards with small tacks. The cover extends past the tool box boards about one half of an inch on each side. There are no signs of any tacks that have been used before. Does anyone know what is correct? Dave

Hello David,

If you do a search in the 2007 Forum on August 10th you will find a duscussion titled 24-25 Closed Car Gas Tank Cover. I know that our Fordor had one originally because I remember removing the tacks or nails from the tool box boards and wondered what they were there for. It wasn't until I read that duscussion that I realised what the tacks had been placed there for. Sincerely, John

Thanks John. I can't find anything on the forum search, I have never had any luck using it. Dave

Hello Dave,

I have never learnt how to post a link to this Forum. I will see if I can work out how to do it to day . Perhaps someone here will chime in on the duscusion. I probably misled you when I said the thread was in the 2007 Forum. You will need to look in the 2005 duscusions, as it covers 2005 - 2007 years. If I can work out how to post the link I will do it today. Best regards, John

Thanks John. I tried the 2005 forum, but nothing would come up. I am very computer illiterate! Dave

John and Shane, many thanks. That is what my repro cover looks like, although it sticks out past the boards on each side about 1/2 inch. I don't think mine has ever had one, at least if it did, it wasn't tacked down. All of the metal clips are there also. Does anyone have the measurements for an original one? Again, many thanks. Dave

Hi Dave,

A couple of things regarding the gas tank cover.

First is that the original covers are very rare. I have never seen one in person, I only have photos of two that were sent to me.

Second, I have not been able to find any documentation on these. There should be a part number for it, but it is not listed in any of the parts books. Bruce has a comprehensive parts list on his CD, but it is not 100% complete. I have tried to make some educated guesses as to which of the missing numbers it might be but so far have not been able to locate it. Without a part number I can't get the Record of Change, or the drawing for this part. Obviously, without that information it is impossible to say exactly what the size was, and when and where it was used.

What I have found is that most of the 24-25 Coupes seem to have this cardboard piece originally. It fits under the little fingers on the top of the rear seat riser sheet metal, and tucks under the lip around the top of the seat riser. It was tacked to the top of the tool box boards (the boards on each side of the gas tank). Most cars have the nail holes there, or even the remains of the tacks, although some people have reported no nail holes in those pieces. If that means that those cars did not have the panel, or that it just was not nailed on is unknown.

The cardboard panel I made is based on the dimensions of the opening in my original 24 Coupe and from information from two people who had original covers. It appeared pretty straight forward as the side to side dimension was just the distance across the tool box boards, and the front to back had to fit in the tabs and under the front lip. I have since found that there seems to be much more variation in some of the dimensions on the body than I originally thought. There is/was some variation just in the tolerances of putting the car together. I had one person where the gas tank was slightly off center with the hole in the cover. The solution was to loosen the gas tank brackets and slide the tank over slightly to align it with the hole. I have not had anyone complain about the width yet - although I don't think that many of these have been sold. Obviously Ford had a dimension that they were making the originals to. How they accounted for the variations I don't know. Since so few originals exist it is impossible to say if they just left them overhang or trimmed them or what. Knowing Ford at the time, they would have probably just left it overhang.

My suggestion is to install it under the lip on the front seat riser, then slide it under the tabs on the rear seat riser. Center the hole on the gas tank opening. After reinstalling the center cross brace, see how it lays across the curve on the top of the tool box boards. You can tack it down with a couple of carpet tacks, or if it lays across the curve just leave it untacked. Since it is wider than you need (which is a good thing), it is your choice if you want to trim it flush with the outside of the tool box boards or leave it overhang. I would probably trim it flush just so it looks nicer and the overhang doesn't get caught on anything and torn. I doubt if anyone will ever be able to tell you that the way you did it is wrong. After researching these bodies for the past 6 years I can't even tell you exactly how it was done. Most people don't even know it is suppose to be there.

If you have any other issues, contact me and we can work it out.

Dave S.

Many thanks Dave. I for one didn't know they were supposed to be there until I saw them listed in one of the vendor catalogs. My coupe has no trace of one ever being there. I'll probably trim it as you mentioned, I think it would work out better in the long run. Again, many thanks. Dave
