I just had to post this. It is truly great to see some good news in a world of disasters.
My heart goes for those miners, and it is so good to see them come home one by one. I can hardly imagine what their thoughts were when they first found themselves trapped, but the key is they did not give up hope.
And lets look for the blessings we have around us - especially in this time of 'doom and gloom'
Cheers
Adrian
Adrian, I have had the TV on all day, and have been shuttling between my computer (where I'm trying to get some work done) and the TV. There are just ten to go as of this moment. I find the reunifications with the families to be extremely moving. It is indeed a great story....
This is a headline on one site:
"Mistresses, Wives Clash"
Oh, the ways you can get caught...
Good going, Ralph.
At least you are dependably consistent.
Seth, does your bed have two wrong sides?
Dick, you must really think that you are as amusing as Ralph.
I remember in the early 1949 when Kathy Fiscus fell down an abandoned 14 inch diameter water well in Southern California and didn't make it. Stan Chambers who is now 90 was the on the spot reporter. Day and night the show went on and they had food vendors and a merry go ground. They made a circus out of it with a sad ending. This was good for a change.
Not at all, Seth, I am just struck from time to time how often you seem to feel that an ordinary thread is in burning need of a snarky comment, which you then supply.
Frank, it was the Kathy Fiscus story that turned me into a newspaper junkie for life. I was 7-1/2 years old when that happened, and it started me reading more in the paper than just the comics. I was really rooting for her to be okay, and was very disappointed when they finally brought her out and she was dead. It was about three days later, as I recall.
If I've told you once, Frank, I've told you a thousand times, "Don't exaggerate." Stan just retired from KTLA on only his 87th birthday, after just 63 years on the job. I can make you a dvd of the KTLA program last month honoring him.
Seith, I didn't make the news, only reported it.
I didn't even read the article.

You want a copy of the program, too, Dick? The Kathy story is in it.

This story shows that you can get caught in hanky-panky even if you aren't a "family values" politician, but it also shows that people can behave admirably and competently. The engineers who set up the rescue did a great job, and it seems the government folks did too.
Sure, Ralph, send it on over. I was startled to see a reference to Kathy Fiscus, since the name has been seared into my memory for 61 years.
And the story about the hanky-panky is just more proof that the news media are for the most part, nothing but whores - will provide whatever will boost profits.
It's too damned bad that in such a serious situation as this, news whores will make headlines out of something like this, and insensitive people will repeat it.
"The bubble headed bleach blonde comes on at five.
She can tell you about a plane crash with a gleam in her eye.
It's interesting when people die.
Give us dirty laundry."
Don Henley
Misery loves company. Don was right. Lots of folks love dirty laundry.
Oh for pete's sake, Seth, relax! There are 33 miners and there have been stories about many of them. The fact that Yanni Barrios had a wife and mistress who met at a prayer vigil is part of the story. I haven't seen any more coverage of that than many other things. (Perhaps you watch different news outlets from the ones I do.) Miner number 32 has a daughter who will be one month old tomorrow. We've been hearing all kinds of things.
Take a deep breath...
Sorry, Dick - I gave up on listening to the news whores long ago.
Both sides of the bed are nice to get out of each morning.
Perhaps you should test that out.
Border news has been dismal and scary, I was truly moved to see that these men are being successfully rescued. I don't care if one, or more, has been a stinker. He gets a chance to resolve his dilemma.
Okay, I confess, I chuckled when I heard the women were both there. Our deeds do tell on us.
YESSSSSS!!!! All 33 are out. What a triumph! The Chileans can be proud at this moment, along with the many people from (I understand) 12 nations that have helped...
It really is an amazing story. Great news.
I'm so glad these guys are finally out.
It's a great human interest story but the media had to beat everything to death! The non stop speculation from "talking heads" about all the "trauma" they will have adjusting back into society. With the possible exception of the guy who has one too many women to deal with, these are a bunch of tough Latino miners. The only thing they want to see when they get back to the surface is their esposas y niņos, latas de un par de cerveza y de una placa de habas y del arroz.
(their wives and children, a couple cans of beer and a plate of beans and rice).
I hope the "media" will leave them alone but that ain't likely.
I couldnt help but wonder, had that been anywhere else, includeing here in the states,WV comes to mind,it would not have been hard at all for the company to come out and say,"We are sorry but the miners lives have been lost and there is nothing we can do".Saveing millions of dollars and keeping 1 side of the storys of bad working conditions and such buried for eternaty.
I am so glad to see the international cooperation in the rescue, and can only hope if miners in our country get trapped they will help them with these ideas and technology.
I heard Lindsay Lohan was released from having to wear an ankle bracelet. My wife says that this person is some sort of actress. I don't know, but they sure talk about her on MSNBC a lot who ever she is.
I saw today that CNN and FNC covered the last miner coming up, greeting his family and the president, etc. etc., but that MSNBC did not. Covering Lindsey Lohan instead, I guess....
I was only 10 yrs. old when Kathy Fiscus fell down the well. I can still remember being glued to the TV (10" Screen) .....watching them vainly trying to get her out alive. Remember how sad people where when they finally got her out. Even at 10 yrs. old......I will not forget them digging all night. It seemed that everyone wanted to help.....we prayed!
I think our country and most of the world was united and closely followed everything that was happening with the miners being rescued. It made it so complete to see inside the mine and watch each miner being put in the capsul to be pulled out.
I was able to watch most of the miners being rescued....what a wonderful experiance. Also seen the miner who was greated by his Mistress....I know he was happy to be saved from dying in the mine, however....he did not look as happy seeing only his Mistress compaired to the other miners when they were being greated by love ones. Did not see the Mistress being hugged by the President like other were. I was wondering if it would be safer for him to go back down in the mine vice being greated by his wife when he gets home. I did get a Chuckle out of that.
What an amazing story with a wonderful ending
Dick, I made a copy of Stan Chambers' story and gave it to Frank tonight with instructions to forward to you. I threw Pancho Barnes in the extra hour.

The Chile peppers would still be down there if it was not for the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the U.S. guys having the oppertunity and freedom to develope the equipment used in getting them out.
A guy fron Denver, Colorado operated the drill. The special bit and a lot of the equipment that was shipped down there came from Penn. just for that job.
A Korean company donated the comunication equipment that was used to keep in touch with then. Japan sent them special flexible commuication cables.
There were a lot of Americans there with their American know-how. Some were asked to go, others offered and were taken up on their offer.
Huge machinery was shipped there from the U.S. to drill that hole.
The guy from Denver is an expert at using those drills and they counted on him to not drill right into the miners.
See if you hear that from the leftist hate america news whores.
The coverage I thought was very poor. couldn't see much. They probably were afraid Americans would be recognized.
I remeber the Kathy Fiscus happening too. I guess I was 12. We did not have a TV and I had never seen one.
I remember the little 2 1/2 or three year old that fell down a well in Midland Texas much better.
They drilled down next to her and a guy went down and broke through to her and brought her up in his arms.
They said how happey he was when he suddenly smelled those several-day old diapers.
I knew a guy from Midland that knows her. Last I heard she was 18, beautiful, just fine and did not remember it any longer.
Those guys that stayed there 24 hours a day and did what they had to were heros too.
The baby Jessica incident happened the week we brought our newborn daughter home from the hospital, made quite an impression on me. I remember that some of the rescuers could hardly stand to leave the scene and get the rest they needed until she was pulled out. I think the Yahoo page had a blurb about her just yesterday.
When she went down the pipe she had one leg up with her foot by her face she was stuck that way throughout the whole ordeal.
I heard that one of the Baby Jessica rescue workers had problems coping after all the fame died out and went into depression and commited suicide. Just something I heard. Can't say it's true. Thought about Snopes'ing it, but figured...why bother?
It is true, Hal, I remember when it happened. It is the reason we need to keep praying for the 33 miners in Chile, it seems there is a lot of attention paid to their mental health right now, I hope they will continue to get help, and not be overwhelmed.
