Hello all. After visual inspection of bands, through access plate, what I can see is that they seem to be quite thick, about 3/16". Also, rotating the drums do not show any sign of cracks or wear grooves and look quite clean and uniform.
My question is what are the tell-tale signs that the bands need changing (other than obvious damage/breaks).
I find that I need to press the Low pedal very hard and there is only a short downward travel in that pedal after neutral position. I also find that the car seems to groan a bit in Low and Reverse. Does that indicate anything?
I am a very new T owner and after it's completion have only taken the car out a couple of times and would have travelled less that 5 kilometers in total.
So my question is about how do I recognise the signs that the bands need changing?
Any help would be appreciated.

The grinding sound in low and reverse is normal. The reason being the power is being transmitted through multiple gears with a sloppy fit (by modern standards).
Time to change band linings is when the possibility of metal to metal contact is getting close. The linings do wear more at one end of the band than the other.
