DISCLAIMER: It is not my intention to start another civil war, but just want to share my experience with monograde Castrol Classic oils in my Model T.
As some may recall I have been using Castrol Classic XL30 with my T even last winter.
This year I wanted to change oil before the winter where it will not be used that much. To avoid eventual acid residues in the oil among others.
I do not buy my oil at any shop, but at a specialised dealer that supports classic cars and sports. He is a mechanical engineer, so he knows what he sells.
I asked him if I should pour the fine Castrol Classic XL 20w/50 as it would be thinner at start and float quicker to the front of the car. This was among others inspired by some of the remarks you guys have put forward here.
Interesting my oil dealer told me not to! Cars like Model T may not combust the gasoline as well as later cars and that gasoline may well end in the oil. The additives in the multigrade oil that make it act as a SAE 50 oil when at 100 degree centrigrade will not work with just a little gasoline in the oil! He recommended me to use SAE 20W like in Castrol Classic Z 20w.
Today I poured the thin 20w oil in my car and took it for the spin. Today was a mild day - up to 13-14 degree C. With the SAE 30 it had a clapping sound at neutral gas (no pull and no push - just even gas) and had expected that to be louder. Also - with the SAE 30 it did "mark it's territory" so I was anxious to see how much oil would drip off the car when hot.
To my surprise, the clapping was much less almost gone and at the 3 or 4 stops I did it made no drips underneath at all.
Well - it was shorter trips (3 - 5 miles) but only with few minuttes stops in between, so I would assume the oil to reach normal operating temperature.
Now I hope to be able to drive a longer trip. May even consider using it next summer as it obviously comes better around and hence lubricates maybe better.
So far a very positive experience.

20W would be an authentic choice for your T. I think your oil dealer is mistaken, but you ended up with a good selection anyway.
