Is it OK to use brass shim stock to shim the ring gear, or does it have to be steel? I know they are available ready made, but I may need it this weekend and don't want to wait a week for a part I may be able to make myself.

use steel, brass is too soft.

The dealers sell shims. They fit perfectly.

I was just hoping to get this thing together this weekend. No dealers down the street to run down and pick one up from. I have access to brass shim stock. I'll have to see if I can find any steel shim stock.....or wait another week.

The more I think about it the more I wonder is a thin layer of brass, that large, securely sandwiched between two pieces of steel, with 10 bolts really that much softer and apt to fail than a 1/4" thick cast babbitt thrust washer which is free to float within a .005" range?

The ring gear shims sold by the major T parts vendors are hardened steel, and they have to be. Believe it or not; brass or regular soft steel can be prone to moving around or hammering out in this area. Of course, you will probably hear from people who used those materials and never had a problem, but that is just the difference between taking your money to a casino or putting it in an FDIC insured savings account...

Thanks Adam, but it's not a factor anymore. I found a crack in the drive shaft at the pinion keyway. I have one on order, along with the correct shims. Boy, was that a disappointment! I had looked forward to building this rear end all week, and was really hoping to get it done. It's OK, though. We found other things to work on, so the weekned wasn't a total loss.
