A few months ago I posted a picture and told folks that I had my wife's uncle's Army air corps uniform from the 40's and was wondering what could be done with it.
There were a few good suggestions and offers but a busy schedule got in the way of further action.

After a ride in the T with our grandchildren we went thru some old pictures. We found his service pictures from 1942, a picture of he and his wife, discharge papers from 1945, various orders from Rome NY AFB and Ft Dix NJ, his 1945 military driver’s license and a 1941 Mitchell Field Thanksgiving Day Station Menu listing all the hospital personnel from the commanding officer, and chief surgeon, thru the veterinary staff to go with the things we found before.

It seems to be quite a collection. It looks as if I’ll need to find time to make a decision about the best place to send it.

Here is a picture of the Mitchell Field menu when Lauren was a private, the uniform, and the medals we have.

I'm sure there has to be a military museum closer to you than we are but we are happy to accept any military artifacts.

Thanks Dennis --

I have searched and can't find anything that specializes in Mitchell Field.
My concern is to find somplace that has stability and ethics.

Fred -- The Hucks Starter truck I just finished is going to the Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach, VA. They have many WW-I and WW-II aircraft and probably would be interested in any Army Air Corps artifacts. Please contact Jery Yagen at EPY1@aol.com and tell him I sent you. Here is a link to the museum's website: http://www.militaryaviationmuseum.org/

That's a good looking uniform. I see it has the "Ruptured Duck" over the right pocket. That's a significant little touch.

"The Origin of "The Ruptured Duck" Insignia
The original Ruptured Duck was a cloth insignia depicting an eagle inside a wreath. It was worn on uniforms above the right breast pocket by WWII servicemen and women.
It was issued to service personnel who were about to leave the military with an Honorable Discharge. It also allowed them to continue to wear their uniform for up to thirty days after they were discharged since there was a clothing shortage at that time. This showed the MP's that they were in transit and not AWOL. Well, the boys thought the eagle looked more like a duck; and, because it meant they were going home, the popular saying was, "They took off like a Ruptured Duck"...hence the nickname"

We have 50,000 artifacts in storage that we don't have room to display. If you can find a place that could put it on display, that would be best but we never turn down a military artifact.

Maybe this will be of some help to you, concerning Mitchel Field.

Mitchel Air Force Base also known as Mitchel Field, was a United States Air Force base located on the Hempstead Plains of Long Island, New York, US Established in 1918 as Hazelhurst Aviation Field #2, the facility was renamed Mitchel Field in honor of former New York City Mayor John Purroy Mitchel who was killed while training for the Air Service in Louisiana.
Decommissioned in 1961, Mitchel Field became a multi-use complex currently home to the Cradle of Aviation Museum, Nassau Coliseum, Mitchel Athletic Complex, Nassau Community College and Hofstra University.

There IS a museum there.
The Cradle of Aviation Museum is an aerospace museum located in Garden City, New York on Long Island to commemorate Long Island's part in the history of aviation. It is located on land once part of Mitchel Air Force Base which, together with nearby Roosevelt Field and other airfields on the Hempstead Plains, was the site of many historic flights. In fact, so many seminal flights occurred in the area, that by the mid-1920s the cluster of airfields was already dubbed the "Cradle of Aviation", the origin of the museum's name

Thank's Dennis --
I just contacted the Cradle of Aviation Museum. We'll see what they say.

Glad I could help. Just for the record, that's an Army Good Conduct Medal in the box.
Obviously, he wasn't a 'rascal' like me, I never got one of those.
