I'm restoring a runningboard battery box for my car. Unfortunately, it's been re-equipped with a padlock hasp instead of the correct key-locking drawbolt. I've tried some of the online luggage and steamer trunk hardware supply sources, but none of them have a drawbolt resembling the original Hayes unit on this battery box:

Does anybody know of a source of hardware that might carry a brass, key-locking drawbolt that at least resembles that?

Bob

Lee Valley has case latches that will do away with the padlock, but they seem to all be ‘Draw’ latches.

That might work if only it were brass. Thanks, Art.

This site has new trunk (tool box) latch originals for sale too, scroll down past the trunks for sale.

You might have to spend so time on google and find the right latch.

Bob:

Gerstner & Sons machinist tool chests have that style of lock. I believe it is the same size as a Hayes lock.

They sell locks on a "replacement basis" - nickel or brass. You are supposed to prove that you already own a Gerstner box in order to obtain a replacement by providing a photo. However, I would think that you could easily get around that. Click on this link and scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page. (Very spendy not to mention $15.00 shipping.)

Otherwise, running board tool boxes are plentiful - find a junk tool box and rob the lock from it.

Dan and Erik,

I sent an e-mail to Gerstner. If they decide to sell me one of their locks, great. It's almost identical to the original Hayes unit. If not, then there's one at "This Old Trunk" that comes fairly close.

Anybody else out there have any ideas?

Bob
