Install and Align Radius Rods
The frame was so low that it interfered with the radius rods. Early style front perches were used so that I could attach "hair pin" style rods. Front brakes may be added to next year’s “to do” list.
I had accumulated a number of (WOS) Worn Out Stock, Apco style ball caps which were used to attach the rods to the frame. In retrospect it would have worked better to weld the ball into the radius rod and fabricate a ball socket bracket for the frame. I didn’t like the stance of the front rods so they were removed and modified during the alignment process. Lots of measurements and adjustments to the turnbuckles placed the front and rear axles perpendicular to the frame. I was especially careful not to stress and potentially bend the rear axle tubes.
It is important for the radius rods to be mounted at the pivot point of the torque tube ball so that the rear axle can move up and down without breaking something. This means that the emergency brake lever must be relocated.
Caster was measured with my iPhone and verified with a carpenter’s square.I chose to give the axle a little more caster than Ford spec.It is important that both side of the axle have the same caster.
What angle app are you useing on the Iphone?
Looks like he's building it in his kitchen!
