Hi Dan

Be careful to get the correct wheels for the axle/drum you are using.
Early 28 (AR) wheels are not correct for later 28 and 29 axle/drums.
Perhaps it won’t matter if your trailer axle has hubs only (no brake drums).

And as a side note, if you ever wondered why the center of the late T and all A
steel spoke wheels looked like a brake drum, look at this 1927 patent drawing.

Bad Idea!!

Art ... here is my idea ... I can get new hubs, 5 0n 5, or 5 on 5-1/2. Since Early A wheels are cheaper than T wheels, and since my T wheels are the later ones that take the early A hub caps, why not use early A 5 0n 5-1/2 wire wheels on the trailer ? Dont really care about the spare for the T not fitting the trailer ...and I think ( but don't know for sure yet ) that the early A 5 on 5-1/2 wheel will fit on the hubs they sell that are 5 on 5-1/2 pattern with no brake drum. See here :

Any thoughts ?????

Hi Dan

I thought you were using an A front axle (as many did) for your trailer, thus my info on the AR and later 28 – 29 wheels.
I have not tried to fit any A wheels to any other hubs for so many years, that I wouldn’t remember exactly what year,
make or bolt pattern would interchange anyway.
I would assume any hub with the correct bolt circle would work on either style 21” A wire wheel, and survive on a lightly
loaded trailer. The problem that arose when AR wheels were used incorrectly on later A hubs was cracking of area around
the inside spoke welds because it was not supported by the brake drum, or cracking around the bolt holes of the later A
wheels when the wheel center was distorted in against the AR brake drum when tightening the lug nuts..
Check for cracks in these areas if you do find a pair of wheels, and remember the style of hubs that you linked to will not
give the wheel as much support as Henry’s 2 circle contact design.

Thanks for the insight Art. The trailer is a 1973 Appleby Camp Trailer, like the picture , that I would like to "Retro" Mod to look 1920's. It currently has the small wheels so I would get a new axle , and I have some heavier 2 leaf springs... an easy conversion. It can't weigh more than 500 pounds ... Mine has straighter sides , not the diamond shape.

I also was able to get a Personalized California plate that is the same number as a DMV free California 1921 pair of plates I bought for $30, so I can get away with a 1921 plate .... In theory ...LOL ! My Mom's cousin at DMV thought that was a nifty idea to sort of get around the "year of manufacture " requirement , and trailer plates are a permanent registration so I'll give it a whirl ....
