Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2011: Are my coils trying to tell me something?

While driving last evening with the coil box cover off, I noticed that #1 and #3 coils points occasionally flash quiet brightly. #3 being the predominate "flasher".

Are my coil trying to tell me something?

All coils were rebuilt with new points(.005 cushion spring travel and .032 points gap),(upper and lower points aligned), new (proper)caps, adjusted for 1.3 amps on a HCCT. 16 individual sparks.

Big sparks typically indicate a failed condenser. Did you replace yours with Orange Drops from Lang's or Fun projects? The smaller ones that Mac's sells are prone to failure.

Michael
If you did all the things you mention to your coils during rebuilding and the car runs properly I would not worry about it. Coil points do flash and it can be more easily seen at night.
I think your coils are trying to tell you to reinstall the coilbox cover. grin

I see sparks from mine sometimes. I was concerned at first that I had done something wrong on the rebuild. I talked to Ron and he gave me the same advice as above. I checked a set of Ron's coils and saw the same thing. They run fine. I quit worrying about them.

Maybe the small flashes attract mosquitoes and the big flashes are when they get too close! :-)

No worries Michael the points are doing what they are supposed to do, worrie when you don't see any sparks.....if they dont flash / spark you'll have a noticeable misfire and a 5 hp loss.

One more question.
Am I supposed to adjust for 1.3 amps while maintaining 6 VAC?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Ron Patterson on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 - 01:14 pm:

The Model T coil will fire on as little as 2 volts AC. Remember the Model T coil is a current device and the only role higher voltage plays is to make the coil get to 1.3 amps FASTER.
Allen Electric advertised 6 volts was required, but most HCCT's have to be spun pretty fast to get to 6 volts because they have weak magnets and loose gap. At normal hand cranking speed of 60 RPM mine puts out a consistent 4 volts AC.

Gary, I took a 750 Honda around the US before med school and camped in the U.P. somewhere between Escanaba and Manistique on the lake at a little public camping area. I woke with the tent surrounded by black clouds of the buggers. I had to pull up camp, pack everything up and tie it down before I could get out of there. I think I lost 2 pints of blood to them, and I was trying to fold things up while running! Sorry about pulling this OT.

Noel,

That is why the population is so small here in the UP. We have hired a fleet of hybrid mosquitoes to keep all but the heartiest people from migrating here.

Rick
