My oil drain plug is a nightmare- it is spinning, dripping and yet won't unscrew. During the course of its life it has been soldered and RTV'ed back into the oil pan. What do folks recommend? I don't want to haul-off and hammer the heck out of it and do more damage.
What do guys recommend?
Thanks,
Jim Chocole
If you mean the collar in the bottom of the pan in which the plug is screwed into. It needs to be welded or braised. Any thing else is wishful thinking.
Mine did the same thing.
I grabbed the plug with vise grips and pulled and pried down on it as I unscrewed it to get it out.
Then I made a new plug in my lathe that has .010" oversize threads.
Been that way about 10 years now.
I don't weld so I did the epoxy in model-you have to get everything very clean but it works well- no leaks (at that spot anyway
If the male oil plug is just spinning due to stripped threads of the female socket, the you can get a repair kit from Lang's.
#3080RK. Self tapping adapter with a smaller drain plug.
In order to remove the plug, you will have to do something drastic. I would start with JB-Weld around the collar. Clean it up really good before you use it. It that doesnt work, try a sheet metal screw where the collar meets the pan. Yes, you will possibly introduce metal shavings into the oil pan, but your only other option is to remove the pan.
Thanks to all for the tips, my biggest decision is either to try and muscle the old plug off or just drill a new hole on the side and get a universal plug. The old one is REALLY in there (just spins and spins)- and it may even be poorly welded from the inside as well???
Thanks,
Jim
