I just want to confirm that wooden hood shelves are supposed to be painted black.
I have the original shelves for my 1911 and there is not a speck of paint of them anywhere. Of course they may have been stripped of paint sometime before I got them...
I just wanted to be sure before I painted 'em...

ps- This photo shows the hood and hood former before they were repainted a true all-but-black color of blue.
I made a set of hood shelves out of cherry wood and no I did not paint them. They match the dash very well. JP
The original maple ones on this 15 do not have any signs of ever being painted.
As I recall, the hood sills on my '13 Touring were black. They are still on the car, but have been repainted. I'm sure your question is are they supposed to be blue or black? Interesting to note, the '13 roadster I'm currently working on has the manufactures symbol, a "B" stamped on the top! I guess they were in a hurry that day. Thinking about it, they would look kind of strange painted blue!
Larry-
Sorry for the confusion. Yes. I will paint them black unless I hear otherwise.
I'm going with the theory that bodies came to the Ford factory painted.
Ford brackets and bolt-on parts would be painted black by Ford. For instance, although the rear fender brackets are bolted to the body, the body did not come from Beaudette with the rear fender brackets in place. They are Ford parts, so they would have been painted back. Same for the hood shelves and hood clips, tail lamp bracket, etc.
On your 1913, what do you mean a "B" is stamped on top? On top of what? Hood shelves? Or do you mean the top bows?

I thought I read somewhere that 1913 hood formers were painted black. Body color makes more sense. Which is correct?
Black is correct, also the caps that fit on the top of the body on an open 13 are also black. not body color. My 13 roadster body was in original condition when discovered under a house back in the 50s. You see them painted body color but I don't beleive that's correct.
Any comments are welcomed as I can't document it better
The hood shelves woul have been painted the same color as the hood and the hood former in 1911.
