Texas panhandle oil boomtown.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borger,_Texas
Borger was a thirties Texas panhandle oil boom town located northeast of Amarillo. Last time that I was through there, it was a Sunday afternoon and I remember passing or seeing maybe a half a dozen cars from one city limits sign to the opposite side of town.
I was born in Borger, 8-10-48. Oil town. Not much there now. Sand, heat, cold, carbon black plants. We had a oil tank dike for a back fence. Ron White is from Fritch nearby. Rick
Rick,
you mean Ron "tater salad" White?
Steve
Rick, you forgot in your list of things in Borger (or at least the area, Rattlers).
And the Canadian River. There are varying theories on why it's called that.
Hello: Veering somewhat OT ....
Speaking of the Panhandle of Texas specifically around Amarillo way / off I-40. Now, I am just speaking to the carnivores (meat and potato folks) out there. I've been to this establishment and I can assure you, one does not leave hungry? A 72 ounce = 4.5# steak; if you can eat it in the prescribed amount of time. And that includes the trimmings; it's free. Note: There is a financial down side to not finishing in the alloted parameters?? Tums and or Ala-seltzer not included.
But it is some kind of Texas restaurant hospitality !!
Anybody been there and enjoyed a meal?

Harvey ....
Geez - Borger is big time with a web site and a museum...
It looks as if the picture card came from the first birthday..
I've heard of it, but never seem to hit Amarillo anytime close to meal time.
We were coming back from Galveston and stopped at Centerville on I45 for gas. As I was filling up 2 vans pulled up beside me and guess what was painted on the windows. Borger X church. I nearly fell over. In talking with one fellow he said they were going to Houston for a church fellowship. I know people who would'nt drive 2 blocks to attend services yet these people had already come 575 miles with another 100 to go. Amazing. He said Borger had about 14,000 people there. I haven't thought of home in a lot of years yet here was 2 instances within days of each other.Only in America.Rick
p.s. yes, Ron "tater salad" White
2009 population of Borger (found on internet), was about 12,500. Man, the population must have left town the summer Sunday that my wife and I drove through. I was expecting to see sagebrush blowing down the highway at anytime. Can't remember if I actually saw any.
