My dad was a depression kid (b. 1920). His first car was a well used '30 Chevy coach.
Told me that even at $.13 a gallon, he could barely afford it. He said that they would mix gas and kerosene to make it stretch. Said the car would be hard starting (gets pretty cold in R.I. in the winter months) and it would smoke like he**, but it ran.
