I have an engine knock. Thinking it to be #1 rod, I removed shims, but the knock is still there. I need some opinions, please.

These are the facts:
1. The knock is louder after warm-up.
2. The knock is audible regardless of timing position.
3. Loudest at idle, but can be heard at all speeds.
4. At slow to medium speeds it gets louder during acceleration.
5. The knock stops when #1 is grounded out. Grounding the other cyls make no difference.
6. .280 cam on board
7. The engine is mounted on a test stand.

Front Main?

Could it be a loose front cam bearing? The only thing that holds the cam bearing in place is the cam bolt. If the bolt doesent hold the bearing in place it would give it some endplay. When I built up my 21 engine I found that the camshaft had excessive end play caused by the cambolt not fitting with a tight fit in the hole in the new cam bearing. I brazed up the cambolt and carefully fit the bolt in the bearing hole for a tight fit. That ended the endplay.

Could be a loose piston or wristpin in #1. It will knock whenever power is applied to #1

Doug Money is right. I removed a shim from each side of the cap and all is quiet now. Thanks for everyone's help.
