I am still receiving e-mails from people who can't access this Forum. Some are nice and some accuse me of just deleting them. There is no way I can answer all these e-mails.
Last week, somehow, the Profile database became corrupted and EVERYONE was unable to post. All you can do is re-register using the Profile icon at the top of the Forum page. If you use the same username and password you had before this disaster, some, perhaps most, of your previous profile might reappear.

WE HAVE NEVER deleted anyone from using the forum! Please just re-register. I'm innocent.
Bruce

Bruce, Dont take adverce comments to heart. 99% of the folks that post on this fourm of know your doing your very best. Thank you for all you do. What happened to the fourm came from outside the fourm as a hack job. I'm almost sure it was some kind of password stealing bug that got into the system. There is not a anti bug softwear made that can get all of them. Bad guys are making new bugs almost every hour to steal information. Again, Thank you for the great job you do.

I too just setup a new id. I am checking into the problem on several fronts. At this point I don't really know what our odds are for recovering the information but am checking into a couple of things.

I am currently in Indiana, just attended the board of directors meeting. Will report back in the next couple of days.

As Bruce says we don't just go in and delete people.

Chris

With every thing posted in the last few day about the crash I think it's a shame that anyone blames you. Thank you again for your efforts here.

Bruce,

Yes...thank you indeed for your efforts, being a webmaster is a bit like being the scullery grunt, folks just generally take it for granted that things go in one end and come out the other effortlessly. They have no idea what it actually takes to have a dynamic web-page, to maintain theclutter that builds, and how a change such as an extra space, or even a comma, or a single quote mark instead of the double quote mark can blow the whole architecture into never-never land until corrected....and there isn't a 'spell-check' for such items!

A famous CEO is quoted during an R&D phase problem when various files refused to handshake correctly 100% of the time, "All I know is I buy my kid a Nintendo, it works right out of the box, and if it gets scrambled, turn it off and turn it on and it all works again!" as he barked his 'motivation' for success. There were stiffled giggles in the room as those in the 'know', knew that in order for Nintendo to have that 'comfort', 10's of 1000's of dynamic interactive run test hours were used before they put it on the shelves!

Sometimes 'poop' happens in all of this stuff and most webmasters can profess they changed absolutely 'nothing' and sometimes it corrects itself automatically, sometimes it corrects itself when the server re-boots, sometimes it stays 'broken' until that one line of code out of 10's of 1000's is found and rewritten to make it bullet-proof!

It IS normally a THANKLESS job for all that undertake it as webmasters. So let me say THANKS again, the best anyone can do is react.

I do not know the actual architecture we use here, but for those who find on re-registering that the rest of their profile doesn't re-appear...I'd be willing to bet that they entered the new user name slightly different, or it might be the password is slightly different...any system then has NO way of knowing how to go and 'fetch' a sub-file.

Users should write down their information somewhere and not rely on 'the system' to remember it. Then if they have to re-register for something...it is EXACTLY the same and any 'nested' programs then have a chance to remain interactive. Although it happens rarely, we have had isolated cases here and there where someone does 'disappear'and there is never an answer, it is simply 'gone'....whether the user accidentally hit 'delete this profile' or whether a gremlin snatched it no-one can ever determine...so...write it down and save it...I know I didn't...and it took me 5 tries at reregistering differently before I found the combination that allowed the rest of my profile to 'sync'.

Thanks for all you do for the T community. You are one of the greatest resources we have. I re-registered and everything is fine.

Bruce,

Thanks for all you do. If someone is not able to reregister and cannot figure it out -- they could always try adding another space or a hyphen etc. so it is a new name and register that way. If they still cannot register -- if they will send me their info I will try to register them this weekend and they can change their password when they log in. (Or with my memory -- I'll forget the password in a day or so anyway.)

Again thank you for all you do and have done.

Respectfully submitted,

Hap l9l5 cut off

Hang in there Bruce; you and others do a Great Job! Keeping this thing running I’ve found in my life time there is always a percentage % of folks that had rather be a part of the problem than pulling together and trying to be part of the solution! Folks like to grumble about things they don’t understand and they think they always have to find something to blame it on, it would be nice to see a culture change where folks would be more understanding of others and appreciative.

Thank you to Bruce and Chris and anyone else that helps to maintain this forum and website. I am wondering, however, if maybe the problem was not a hack, but a problem with the memory or hard drive. I have seen in some threads that in one a picture that had been posted and was there for a while then later disappeared. And in another case someone posted a comment in a thread and the post ended up in another thread. This just seems like a hardware issue to me. Please guys be sure to backup everything. Then see if you can find someone that can run some diagnostics on the hardware.

Again thanks for all that you do.

I am pretty sure I have found what I need to put the profiles back together and will probably do that this weekend.

I found a backup of the profiles list dated July 14 and need to merge that with all the entries from everyone re-entering their user ids.

I will also be making changes to how the info is backed up to protect us from this in the future.

Any questions please let me know.

Chris

Also I forgot to mention this.

There is a utility on the forum to re-build the user status based on posts. I will run that after I put the profiles back together.

.... so all you experts will become experts again!

Although I was thinking that all you need to become an expert is make a lot of postings, maybe we should look at changing those descriptions????

Chris

Chris, is that a question you are asking of the Forum users? If so, I would suggest you DO consider changing descriptions....many posts do not necessarily an EXPERT make - as far as I have been able to perceive.

Thanks for your work, and Good Luck in your endeavor.

Dave

Bruce:

I just know you took out my profile because of that $5 you claim I still owe you on that motel bill from our last research trip to Dearborn. I don't care how many times you make the forum crash, I still am not going to pay you!!
