Just a repost for those who don't know or are having trouble finding subjects. Replace the word "bearings" once you have clicked on the link with whatever subject your looking for .

You don't need to include "www" or "http" etc. when Googling the website for a particular subject.

Use site:mtfca.com for the entire website or site:mtfca.com/discus to search only the forum.

Dan,
The search you listed will only search in the thread titles. Maybe a better way to search would be to search in the messages. I find that many times the thread titles are not descriptive of the subject in the thread. For example, a current thread is titled "Is This Another Accident Waiting to Happen?". There is no way to know that this thread is about Wishbones. Another example is a thread titled, "What goes in here?" There is no hint that the thread is about crankshaft pins. In both of these examples if you did a message search for Wishbone or crank pin you would likely find the information you wanted but if you searched just the thread titles you would not find these threads.

Another way to do it is to do a standard google search, then on the first screen that comes up with results, click on the "Advanced search" link in the upper right. When the Advanced search page opens, add http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/ in the "Search within a site or domain:" box. Once you do a search like this the http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/ will appear in the "Search within a site or domain:" box just by clicking twice on the box, you don't have to re-enter it for each search.

Jim

Not true. There is no difference if you search via mtfca.com/discus or mtfca.com/discus/messages.

If you use either search method, the threads with the key words in the subject line will appear higher up in the search results queue and the threads with the key words in the bodies of the threads will appear lower in the search results queue.

Erik,
I agree, there is no difference if you search via mtfca.com/discus or mtfca.com/discus/messages. However, Dan's link searches in http://www.mtfca.com/cgi-bin/discus/ and it seems that the "cgi-bin" is for thread titles only.

You can test it out, do a search for "Henry wasn't in 7th grade" in the "cgi-bin" and you will come up with one unrelated result. And, do the same search in the "/discus/" or "/discus/messages/" directories (same results either way) and you will find a bunch or results including first, this exact wording in the "Is This Another Accident Waiting to Happen?" thread.

Bottom line, the "cgi-bin" search only searches the thread titles and will not find text in the messages themselves.

Jim
