in the middle of taking things apart...

I was surprised that the water pump does not spin freely after taking it off the engine. It's not 'stiff' but pretty darn close. Is this normal?

I'm trying to remove the starter motor and took off what appears to be the only 4 bolts holding it on. Still unable to remove it..am I missing something?

Thanks guys...

BTW,,,it's VERY hot here in Atlanta.

STOP!!! Do not try to remove the starter without first removing the bendix from the other side. You can do serious damage. See pages 212 and 227 in the manual.

A lot of experienced T guys will tell you the best use of the water pump is as a boat anchor. It's an aftermarket item Ford didn't put on the car. It's not needed if the cooling system is in good condition.

Michael take cover off other side of trans, hope ya didn't pull too hard on starter cause you can damage magneto, remove bendix under cover don't loose the keyway for starter shaft. Youre gonna need new bolts and washers the two bolts holding bendix spring on are different sizes make note of which one goes where

That water pump should just be removed, no need to restore, Ford works fine without one.

After the Bendix is removed from the starter shaft, you have the four machine screws out, an old gasket/or cement is holding it on the hogshead. Take a rubber mallet and loosen it up, that heavy starter will fall into your hands.

If youve never done it before, as mentioned, STOP! Put the screws back in and remove the bendix first. BTW, the cover screws are a special Ford thread... DONT LOOSE THEM!. Next, take two screws out and install two 3 inch long studs. Now take out the other two screws and wiggle the starter. Kind of ease the bendix end AWAY from the engine as it comes out or it WILL crunch the mag coils. No MAG is no fun! willy

Notice small notch for starter snout to clear the DAMAGED coil. For the first time, is there anyone that can support the bendix end for you? Its awkward and heavier than it looks!

need a little more help here:

After removing the cover of the bendix gear, it appears that there are two bushings held onto a shaft by two bolts which pass through the side walls of the bushings. Between the two bushings is a large spring that goes over the shaft. I assume this is the bendix sring? So, am I to remove the two bushings and the spring prior to backing out the starter motor?

Thanks,

Michael

Michael:
I have a question? Do you havae a starter problem, does it leak, does it drag, is the bendix spring broken , is thebendix unit broken i some way, if you answered NO to any of the previous, don't take the starter off.
The reason is that if you are not careful you can create two leaks, one at the main side of the starter and one at the bendix cover side..
Good luck at what ever you do on the "T"

Opps: I forgot and no one else mention the two
tab lock washers. Michael you have to fold the tab away from the bolts carefully. If you dont break the tab off you could use them again but really it is better to install new ones. They keep the bolt from backing out.
Stop think and then do what has to be done.. If you have one of the Black books on the Modle T read it carefully, as it is my "T" bible. It has the best info that you can use.

Michael: I tried to put on the site about the tab washers, you must fold the tabs down and carefully. You sometimes can use them againg but for what they cost replace them.

All...thanks for the help. My 10 year old son fell and broke hios arm last PM so I've been a little side-tracked. He's fine - loves his cast as they made it in orange and blue. Something about Miami - go figure.

Bill - The starter works fine, but I'm doing a complete restoration. There is actually a bolt I can't reach to remove the left front fender with the starter in place.

Dan - yes, I do have a copy of the Ford service manual. I should have thought to read the darn thing!

Will keep you guys up-to-date!

Is your son going to tell everyone that he broke his arm cranking the T?
Seriously, I am sorry to hear about his accident. Ah, the joys of raising kids. Enjoy these days, broken arms and all. Before you know it, kids grow up, move out, develop lives of their own. And you find yourself wishing you could have a lot of that time back. And I have a good relationship with my oldest son. He has ridden with me seven of the past eight 200 mile endurance runs.
Drive carefully, and enjoy, W2
