Does anyone have a picture(color) of the proper color and routing of the Mag. and Batt. wires from the coil box back?

This is the later models. You didn't say what year.

Depends on the year of the coilbox, the year of the ignition switch plate and body type if commercial or aftermarket as in a depot hack.

The ignition switch and lighting looms in later cars each routes the RED mag wire contained in the looms and that RED wire goes from the Mag terminal on the switch connecting to the magneto terminal on the hogshead. [i.e the RED wires go to #2 screw on the composite rubber like terminal block.]

The battery wire is BLUE w/YELLOW tracer and is contained in the switch harness, that wire goes from the coil box porcelain standoff terminal to the BAT terminal of the ignition switch.

1923 low hood/cowl

1924 high hood/cowl
A few extra wires for ditch lamp and brake lights and a ground wire for the aftermarket horn.

Dan. I have a 14 Depot Hack w/a 22 engine. My coil box has a mag and a battery terminel on the engine side of the firewall. I think the coil wire goes directly yo the mag, but I am not sure. I think I have seen in a catalog that the coil wire from the mag post to the coil box mag terminel is the same as the plug wires. The other terminel is for the battery wire. Should that be blue / yellow tracer?

That should be OK. Similar set up when doing a clone '09. Coil box had the mag and bat terminals on the firewall side, as the box was built with aftermarket key lock ignition switch. Had '22 engine with elec start so wired the switch Bat side to the coil battery terminal.

The coil box contained the switch and wiring so I made sure the wiring in the box base was OK to be sure not to put 6v to the magneto! So check out what kind of switch is on your coil box, be sure the wiring goes to the appropriate terminal on the firewall side.

The magneto terminal on the hogshead used a large yellow wire just like the spark plugs, and goes to the coil box standoff terminal for the magneto side of the switch.

Depending on the switch or lighting loom you are using would be the wire color for the battery wire to the coil box firewall terminal. Just trace the wire ends with a tester to be certain.

In your first post you stated:

"The battery wire is BLUE w/YELLOW tracer and is contained in the switch harness, that wire goes from the coil box porcelain standoff terminal to the BAT terminal of the ignition switch.

I don't think you really meant that because wiring the coil box power connection directly to the BAT terminal on the ignition switch would result in the coil box being permanently powered.

Correct, my mistake, didn't proof read that part closely, was trying to cover two topics at once, mag and bat!

You are very correct, I should have posted "..that wire goes....to the COIL terminal of the ignition switch."

Thank you sir.

Dan

Dan:

I think one of the most confusing issues created by Henry was that he did put 2 connections for power on the coil box for a lot of years but never ever showed any actual physical wiring to the "BAT" connection nor where such battery was to be physically located so it confuses a lot of folks. Probably just stubborn old Henry not willing to budge even an inch on the "battery not needed" issue. It appears he refused to let anyone talk about a battery with regard to Model T ignition. In the early literature it only talks about it with regard to where to connect it up if a "battery should accidentally be needed" or some such wording. Really funny. He touted his car not needing ignition battery so loud and often that I guess he was deathly afraid of being called out as a hypocrite. Has anyone ever seen any Ford drawing or specification as to where to physically mount a starting battery on an early car?

Agree. Henry wanted the T to be without any type of storage or dry cell battery ignition, he wanted to have his low-tension magneto be the only source for trouble free operation.

The early Owners Manuals say nothing of adding a battery to the Battery Terminal on the coil box! Even a caution to be sure not to throw the switch to battery!

But, as you posted, there are two connections on the firewall side of the earlier wood and metal coil boxes with switch plates on the front to add a 'battery' source to power the coils.

And, me too, haven't seen any FORD printed material to show how or even tell you that a battery source can be hooked to the coil box, OTHER than the picture cut above from the Owners Manual titled 'Wiring of the Ford Ignition System' Cut no. 10, which shows that Battery Terminal.

Other sources of info, like this 1919 publication by Automobile Digest, "Ford Text Book", do tell how to add the battery.

The folks at Texas T parts have several schematics available for free download.
