Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2011: "welding"coil points?

Our "new" 1909 has remaned Kingston coils, and now two of the points have "welded" the bottom contact to the top. Am I setting them too far apart? They seem to make a lot of noise compared to our other coils (also spark quite a bit).

They don't spark and make as much noise on mag as on battery.

Thanks for advice,

Rob

I thought that was a sign of a weak condenser.

Rob:

That question is better directed to Randall Anderson who is the early Kingston/Jacobson-Brandow/Heinze "Coilmaster"

Doug and Bob,

Thank you. I think R.V. Had the answer.

Thanks again,

Rob

What was the answer?

I have looked the coils over and I believe that on two coils, the vibrator contacts loosened, causing excessive sparking and heat buildup. Eventually they stuck together and then pulled out entirely.

Replacing the contacts and one of the vibrators got them going again and they have been sent back to Rob where they should get one of his '09s jack-rabbiting down the road again.

RV are you talking about loosening where they nuts hold them on or where the points themselves mount to the blades?

R.V & Rob :

I had similar problem with the re-pro K-W points on a standard Ford coil a few months ago. The contact was not attached to the vibrator or cushion spring properly, even though they appeared to be upon inspection & installation.

I was told the problem has been corrected, but there may be stock in vendor's possession that may have this defect.

Bob,

That's what appeared to happen on these. I also noticed the coils (points?) were much louder on battery than on mag. I don't think I 've noticed such a distinct difference with our other coils.

Doug, it was the contact points themselves. Apparently the riveting was defective. They have been returned to the manufacturer ;>) and the no-good so-and-so was given a crack across the knuckles.
