Hi guys
I have a stromberg carburetor that needs cleaning as it keeps flaking bits that block it up. What is the best solution to soak it in to remove the debris from inside that wont damage the caseing. Thanks in advance for you replies.
Mark

Take it apart completely and have someone with a media blast cab clean it for you. There are types of media that will not harm the metal.

boiling them in TIDE soap used to clean them up very nicely. About 30 minutes and they come out like new.

Frank, will that work on an NH? Dave

I sent mine up to Stan Howe in Montana and he did a fantastic job of totally rebuilding it and also updated some things like a new seat and several screws. Runs great now!

Dave he was talking about a 1960's Stromberg, most likely a dual or four throat downdraft carburetor with accelerator pumps and not a Holly N H carburetor which is not much more than a Mason Jar with a wick stuck in it for evaporation. . .

Media blasting will remove all the crud, but then you have to remove the media residue. We recently rebuilt a Chev. Carter this way then tanked it in carb. cleaner and and used compressed air to finish the job. Works well so far!

I keep a five gallon pail of carburetor cleaner in my cellar (so it won't freeze), and it does a good job. After rinsing off the cleaner with a water hose, I blow out the passages with compressed air. Works OK so far. But one warning. I used this on a tractor carb that had a little aluminum ID disk on it, and the disk dissolved.

Frank, I know what he was talking about. I know what a stromberg carb is. I was just wondering if the Tide deal would work on a cast iron carb. I hadn't heard of using it as a carb cleaner. I have used the carb cleaner that we used to get back in the '60's and '70's, but I don't want to buy a big bucket of it for just one NH, if it is even still available. Dave

I have a gallon of good old stock cleaner carburetor cleaner and save ir for special occasions. It is about 30 years old and has not rusted through the can yet. Cast iron will clean up with Tide just a well as pot metal does. Very careful media blasting will work well and soda or walnut shells would be best.
