Similar but different from the Trainor accessory spring discussed in this recent thread: http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/179374/239205.html?1317786882

kerry,

I believe that setup was made by Hendersons springs. I have had one in the past, but have never used one. There is one setup on a Victorin car that I know of.

Several mfg of those 'extended' front springs. Buddy of mine got a front one at Hershey this year, it runs from spindle yoke to yoke, with bent up portion against the yoke. Plans to use it on a TT truck chassis.

I found a set of "Defender" front shocks which am putting on the '23 cutdown.

There was one of those long spring setups on a TT chassis for sale on eBay about a month ago. I have never seen one in person.

Frank-
Allan was correct. That style of spring set up is known as a Henderson. I dont know where it was manufactured but I think it might be more of a Colonial accessory more common in the commonwealth countries, similar to the accessory Stepney spare rim. The Henersons springs seem to be on quite a lot of the Tarrant supplied victorian cars, but not so common in the other states.

Here was that TT frame for sale on eBay with the accessory front spring.

Thanks for help fella's
Warwick, now that I know it's a local thing that may be a little easier to track a set down, I would be interested in looking at a set up, do you know this T? or does it come to mind someone in the club using one, it is an old photo going by the old transfer rego stickers on the windcreen.

I have one like the one that is on the TT that Dan posted. I am planning on putting it on my TT some day. I have seen several similar to those, but I've never seen one like Kerry posted. Dave

Dan T, That is the one. I remember clearly looking at the photo. I never can seem to find them later. Thank you.

Frank, I did recognise the front end of the car before you posted the picture. I am not sure of the wherabouts of the car now but it used to live in Frankston and was used to advertise the Armstrongs shoe shop down that way. It was used in the 70/80's on Victorain Veteran and Vintage car rallies before the Vic. T Club existed. Bruce Csorba in the T Club has a Dalgety bodied car with a Henderson Spring attached. I think he may also have some spares in his pile of stuff. I sold one at a T Club swap meet some years ago. The spring that Dan has posted pictures od seems very similar but maybe a bit more fancy in the way that it is mounted to the axle. I will try and find out where the Henderson spring came from. Perhaps it was Victorian made?? Maybe Bruce will read this and post a picture of his cars set up.

One of the NSW members had a one of these springs on a yellow speedster we built here in Kiama. He sold the car to a Mr Poppin (spelling) in Western Australia who has had it on the last 3-4 national tours. There are others from memory in the NSW Club also

Henderson Springs is an old Sydney firm which I believe has now been sold and the name changed. I had the Town Cars front spring retempered by them way back in 1968. At that time the forman gave me copies from their files of the different Model T springs they made. I have them in my files somewhere, all the different Model T springs they made are set out leaf by leaf, it runs to several pages. I would think this is the same Hendersons.

If my memory serves me , wasn't there one of the springs on a front axle at the side of a back road on the Echuca tour in 2008? it was part of a spotto in the instructions the kids had to look for.

Peter, Warwick, others,

Hendersons had spring works in different locations in Australia. There was even a plant in little old Gawler at the bottom of the hill where I used to live. Then they moved to Elizabeth and no doubt supplied springs to the General Motors Holden plant there.

That spring with the upturned ends does appear to be more Common on Victorian cars, perhaps reflecting local manufacture and/or Tarrant Motors fitment.

Much more common in South Australia were shock absorbers made in the UK by Wilcox and Richards and most likely supplied and fitted by Duncan and Fraser as an option on cars sold by them.

Here is the Henderson front spring on our 1925 "Dalgety" bodied tourer.
Henderson spring

This spring has a double main leaf. (Added extra leaf)
The loop around the axle top has a locking bolt at the rear. Henderson cast into the bracket front.(Not really visible in photo.)
The wishbone is located by sawn off perches.
Henderson end bracket

I have two of these setups. (One I bought from Warwick). I also have a bunch of the end brackets.
The Henderson Spring Works used to be (still is?) opposite Ford Australia in Geelong.

Here is a previous discussion of a different front setup.
