Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2011: Speedo & Carbide Generator Location

Does anybody know the correct location for both the speedo & Carbide generator on a Canadian 1910 T

USA Books show the generator on the LHS and the speedo on the RHS of the firewall.

Is there any reason why they are mounted there? Does the generator have be close to the driver and why the speedo in front of the passenger?

Did the Canadians follow the same principal and mount the generator on the RHS and speedo on the left? Being RHD, its very cramped with a steering column, mixture screw and a speedo

There seems to be a lack of books and manuals on the Canadian cars compared to the USA built models

Cheers. Alan from Western Australia

Hi Alan, why not ask some one here in Australia like David Chantrel where the car can be found instead of the United States, local members have better knowledge on your vehicle as David has access to that model. If one was to follow the US books then the positions would be reversed for RHD vehicles. The books for the Canadian vehicles exist but you have to know where to look or ask.. Ray

Alan,
The book entitled "Faces of Ford" by Michael White has a wonderful photo of many 1912 Canadian chassis' being individually assembled. All cars are right hand drive and the speedometer gear is mounted ontn the right front wheel, indicating the speedometer would go on the right side. I can't respond to the carbinde generator, though. I hope this helps,

Alan's is a good question as the valances are piereced on both sides on slightly later cars. Wheter as early as 1910 is yet unresearched, by me anyway.

Speedo - all off the original examples I have seen the speedo is mounted on the RH side of the car as the drive unit is on the RH wheel, this makes it the same as the US counterpart.

Carbide Generator - mounts on the control or driver's side between the "doors" depending on which hand the car has been assembled. Hence the numerous surviving examples of piercings in the valances for the carbide hose on both sides for either side.

Hi Alan and David, never let it be said that I do not help with photos. these two are the only ones I could get with a clear view as the rest are all taken on the left side of the car. The speedo is clear to see where it was fitted and the generator is where David said it should be. Ray

Hi Alan, hope these original photos help...Dave C.
Quite clear the carbide generator is mounted on the control side. The 1910 photo you can clealry see the speedo drive mounted on the RH front wheel; speedo head mounts on the RH side as supported by Ray's photos too.

OK Thanks for the replies gents. Much appreciated. I was confident that the generator was on the RHS but thought that the speedo would be in front of the passenger like in USA.The question was prompted when my speedo outer casing arrived from Langs and it a perfect length to run from the RH wheel, under the engine and up through the floorboards on the LHS. Lucky that i have one of those offset brackets that move the speedo head over more to the right and clear the steering column even more. Now i have a extra long cable casing...
