Since they're all looking at the pump, maybe the hose is longer than we think and there's another person out of sight at the nozzle??
The hose is coming from the centre section were the pump mechanism is stuated. When not in use the hose folds into the door an the doors are closed to then form a round locked unit.
Obviously gasoline wasn't as flammable back then!
The guy standing behind the pump is doing the pumping.
